You'll pick up stuff from the bassist too, just from checking him/her out in a band context.
If you like wisea$$es, just sit in a big band horn section for awhile. They're a different breed.

I played trumpet in high school jazz band. Made it all the way up to 1st chair my senior year. My band director, who was a trumpet player, always told me I needed to be more arrogant and obnoxious. If the trombone players could still hear at the end of practice I wasn't doing my job. He also showed me the trumpet player's handshake:
As you shake their hand you say, "Hi, I'm better than you." |

While you don't get all the "glory" of the lead parts, the harmonies with the lead are still pretty tight - unlike the 3rd, and 4th (bass bone) parts stuck in the basement on those wierd lower chordal harmonies.
As well, the parts are usually in the comfortable range (except Thad Jones stuff ) so you can use slide/lip vibrato, scoops, and all that other good stuff and be heard! Plus your chops will last longer by not reading all those upper ledger lines!!!
Playing t-bone in jazz band brings back many fond memories for me. I always used to use a big plant sprayer and loved pelting the sax players on the back of their heads while they were playing! Gotta love being a BRASS-HOLE!!!!!

still an awesome tune though
