Well done, lad. I sat 2nd trumpet in a whole bunch of big bands. It's cool, because you don't have to be having your neck veins sticking out and your eyeballs bursting the whole time, and you get to play some cool inner chord voices.

You'll pick up stuff from the bassist too, just from checking him/her out in a band context.

If you like wisea$$es, just sit in a big band horn section for awhile. They're a different breed.

Well, congratulations I guess. Personally, I always opted to sit in the back of all of my classes, but if you like the front, have at it.

I played trumpet in high school jazz band. Made it all the way up to 1st chair my senior year. My band director, who was a trumpet player, always told me I needed to be more arrogant and obnoxious. If the trombone players could still hear at the end of practice I wasn't doing my job. He also showed me the trumpet player's handshake:

As you shake their hand you say, "Hi, I'm better than you."

LMAO.... haha thats great... the trumpets that sit behind me during normal band blow my ears out i'd hate to have them behind me in jazz... but hopefully when second semester rolls around i'll get to play bass in the jazz band at my school.

Congrats. Just make sure the guy in first chair doesn't kick down a rusty trombone for you to play.

I played 2nd bone (and sometimes I switched with 1st) in one of my old university jazz ensembles. While you don't get all the "glory" of the lead parts, the harmonies with the lead are still pretty tight - unlike the 3rd, and 4th (bass bone) parts stuck in the basement on those wierd lower chordal harmonies.
As well, the parts are usually in the comfortable range (except Thad Jones stuff) so you can use slide/lip vibrato, scoops, and all that other good stuff and be heard! Plus your chops will last longer by not reading all those upper ledger lines!!!

Playing t-bone in jazz band brings back many fond memories for me. I always used to use a big plant sprayer and loved pelting the sax players on the back of their heads while they were playing! Gotta love being a BRASS-HOLE!!!!!

on "take the A train" 2nd part doesn't have any notes that aren't on a ledger line. the part might as well be written in treble clef.

still an awesome tune though
