I have a La-Z-Boy sectional with built in recliners. Also known as the "Command Center"

Buy quality. A crappy sofa will only last a few years, where a quality one will last 20. Also, buy in a dark or neutral colour, that way it will fit in with multiple colour changes through out the years.

Neutral color if possible (lime green and red are two of the worse colors you can pick, go from there), as was said, and be sure to like the look and feel of the fabric before getting it. I'd also pick a solid color before patterned fabric, but that'S just me. Solid black almost always works. Chocolate too and it's in fashion.

If you are into taking naps, try to see if it's comfortable enough to do so. I'd recommend buying somethign like a sectionnal four seater (L-shape) if you don't care too much about arm rests.

If you do, two seaters can be had for pretty cheap and they sometimes have recliners built-in. Three seaters are harder to move and if you're moving into an apartment, they might be too big to fit in the room and be a PITA if you decide to change apartements later on. No sense in buying something you will have to leave behind.

True that man! Plus they always try to open when you're moving them. I swear I almost lose a finger every time!

IKEA.

I respectfully disagree with BillyRay's advice about avoiding strong colours. You can get very nice contrasts and make a more lively room by choosing a strong colour, but make sure it fits well with the other colours around it.

My brother's girlfriend has a great sense of colours and interior design, and their sofa is red with a slight hint of orange. Fits perfectly in their living room with grey and white walls, and bleached wooden floor. The only drawback with it is that it's rather uncomfortable...

This. I'd also recommend a 3 cushion. The two cushion's i've experienced tend to develop a "dent" in the middle from being one of the more used spots. Then everytiem you sit, you feel unwillingly drawn by it's gravitational pull.

The middle seems like it wouldn't see so much use in a house with two people, but it does. It's the first spot a guest will sit in. When you're lying on the couch, that's where your butt and a good chunck of weight will be. And, lastly and most likely: when you and the girl are on the couch together one of you is riding bitch and putting a damn dent in it.

With respect to the post above, the problem with the strong colors is that they "date" quicker than more subdued hues. It goes from being fresh and updated to "oh, I liked 1996, too" pretty fast.

I still shop for couches on large trash day in nice neighborhoods. I'm 38, I guess it's too late to grow up now.

Strong colors look good if you plan the whole room. We're talking about a guy who asks about buying a sofa on a bass forum I doubt he is taking counsel from a designer.

Strong colors also tend to age less gracefully. A sofa sees a lot of butts and is usually in direct sunlight. Red today might be pinkish in ten years.

Pay the extra dough to have the Scotchguard treatment done or some kind of stain repellant. Those nasty stains on your couch do not make for great "war stories". Maybe in a house full of dudes, yes. You and your girl? No way.

For $500-$1200? I can't recommend a couch but I know you can get a Nice used Lakland in that price range.
