As a 3 time alum of Grand Valley State Univeristy (bachelors, 2 masters) I've been following Brian Kelly's career closely ever since he made us a powerhouse in our divison. Big fish in a small pond is what I tell people. I think it was a great choice. His talent has overacheived at 3 places. Taking a coach with that history is better than taking an assistant from a champ in my opinion. But 3 things bother me about this.
1. Why can't recruiting wait til after the season so that coaches can play out the year? Once Kelly decided he wanted the job he had to get started on recruiting or he'd be at a serious disadvantage. A simple rule change would fix this nonsense of coaches leaving before bowl games.
2. Why is there not a playoff in Divison 1 but there is one in Divsion 2 (GVSU is in it once again)? Whatever arguement you make for or against it, why can't you make that arguement in the other division? In fact I'd say the arguement of the students needing to study for finals is even more important in Division 2 since the chances are even slimmer that they will be playing ni the pros and thus are students first.
3. Why does congress have to get involved? As much as I'm a football fan and don't like the current system, I still don't lose any sleep at night over it. Can't say that about the economy.

The only thing that was bad was the way he lefct Cincinnati just before the biggest bowl game in the history of the school. His former players were really hurt that he left them hanging. I really think he could have gotten Notre Dame to delay the announcement until January.

but that begs the question, how do regular coaches do it? do they go off recruiting knowing full well they have a bowl game to quickly get in order? this time of year for a successful coach must be pretty ridiculous. |

That's very immature to me. He has a commitment to his current (previous now I guess) school, honor that until the season is over. If it means he's a little behind on recruiting, so what? It's not that much more time. |

I blame the system, not the coach.

| ONE main reason: the bowls make the schools and networks lots of money. Second-level, the college presidents run the NCAA and they like having lots of places to go to bowl games.
But all the excuses about making the season too long are just transparent fabrications. Those arguments are too ridiculous to credit.

Now, seeing the reaction of the players, I'm not so sure.
I'm a USC fan, so I naturally don't care for Notre Dame. Seeing how he left his Bearcats high and dry, I hope Kelly sucks big time in South Bend.
