I HATE casinos...

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry, not much reason to post this, I'm just dwelling and need to vent...

So to start this, I recently lost my crappy, low paying job. While I had the job though, I put a bass amp on lay-away at the local pawn shop, just a lowly Behringer BX1200, but an amp nonetheless, because frankly I am absolutely sick and tired of playing through my line 6 gx and having to use my crappy headphones.

So fast-forward to now, I still have 100$ left on the amp, but only 80$ bucks to my name, and am incredibly lucky not to have any bills at the moment, but am not exactly willing to spend the last of my money on the amp, especially since at the moment I have no more money coming in the foreseeable future.

So today, since I also don't have a car at the moment, my grandma gave me a ride to a casino to put in an application for a job, all fine and dandy, but afterwards, my grandma, an avid gambler decided she wanted to hit up the slots while we were there, so I was just gonna chill out and just kinda cheer her on...

Well eventually I got bored and decided, what the heck, why not have a little fun so I pulled out 20$ and decided to go at it for awhile. Well, after about 30 minutes I had most triumphantly turned that 20$ into 85$, and was on cloud nine, I've been to casinos a couple times before and had never at any given time been up for anymore than a couple bucks before it all went back into the machine, and was about to pull out all my money and call it good, when all of a sudden I had become broke again... I had gotten greedy and stupid and put it all back in the machine... AAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHH

So now I sit here, dwelling in my greedy stupidity, with thoughts of how I could be playing my awesome new amp (for me at least) right now, because if I had kept my winnings that would have given me enough buffer room to get the amp tonight and all would be good, and now with no money coming in I have no plans of picking it up ANYTIME soon. And with the fact that yesterday I missed an amazing job opportunity due to something really dumb that I did a couple weeks ago on my birthday, I am really feeling pretty down right now just over the whole mess. I wish I could just write these off as nothing gained, nothing lost, but these really sting right now and just had to vent.

tl;dr, I'm dumb and hate myself at the moment.

I don't know who said it, but "quit while you're ahead" would be one to remember. Or, "don't gamble money you can't afford to lose." When I'm at the convenience store, I'll buy $5 of lotto tickets if the jackpot's over $50 million. That's pretty much the extent of my gambling. I know my chances of winning are approximately equal to zero, but if I don't buy a ticket, they are exactly equal to zero. Keep in mind, casinos make gargantuan amounts of money off losers, and almost every player is a loser.

Of course you knew all this.

Lol, I indeed did know all of this, but after sitting around for awhile and watching my Grandma turn 20$ into 297$, I got the itch and had to give it a shot myself.

Well, apparently luck isn't hereditary...

What I normally do if I am ahead is take the original amount I started with and put it back in the wallet. If I win & lose anything over that, I broke even.

My dad said it years ago.

"Never gamble with money that you can't afford to lose."

Period, point made.

I worked in a casino in Nevada one summer - very quickly learned that gambling has no allure for me - none at all. Why? Because I don't have money to lose.

I don't have any problem with casinos - when people gamble in them, they're responsible for the outcome. I believe that people are responsible for their actions.

But there's GOOD news for the OP - he'll get past this low point soon, and he has learned never to gamble again! It was a relatively inexpensive lesson.

Your story gets told hundreds of times everyday in casinos all over the world. So many people can not resist the lure of greed.

They don't call it the one-armed bandit for nothing. Stick to blackjack when you can get away with losing cash if things go south.

yeah, I've sworn off casinos before, they had taken enough of my money, but I was tempted by what i saw and well...

If I ever do decide to gamble again, it'll be playing the poker tables, but I'm pretty sure that won't be happening for a long, looooooooooooong time, lol. But like I said, I have no bills right now, so the only thing im missing out on is a few days worth of cigarettes, but the thing that hurts was I pretty much had my amp in my hands and.... poof, lol

I was given the same bit of advice, too true.

I never gamble at casinos, there is one winner, the casino.

However, sharking my mates at cards, that's something else entirely

I had a sticker once that said "Lottery- a tax on people who are bad at math" I think the same logic applies to casinos. Next time, just send the money to me.

I am not sure about the bad at math thing. The engineering office that I work in has an office lottery pool. Some of the smartest people that I have ever met and all good at math. I don't join the pool, but rather save my money each week, I bought new shoes with my money.

Once you accept gambling as just another variation on the for profit entertainment industry, no more problem.

You are not stupid, simply misinformed. Gambling is no different than going to a movie. It gives you something to do for a while and you pay to enjoy it.

Legal casinos are honest as the day is long, they pay back 2~3 buks for every 5 they take in. it's a profit on investment no different than the profit taken on an investment in a movie complex.

The trick is not to be fooled in to the idea that you instead of them will take the profit from any transaction between the two of you.

With so little cash and your future amp in the balance, you wouldn't consider a movie would you?

Last, I do not envy youth in this information overload age. When I was a kid, something stupid usually earned you a humiliating ride home from the PD instead of an official black mark so early on.

Most legal slot machines converge to retaining between 5 and 20% of what goes in. Put in $1 get $.80 back. The more you play the more that is guaranteed.

I could tell you more about slots then you will ever want to know but i wont. Except for this free tip: get into the gaming industry.

Remember two things: The Law of Large Numbers and that the odds always favor the house. The Law of Large Numbers says that the more you play, the more likely your results will conform to the actual odds, which favor the house.
