I just bought 2 mac book!! (and I need help)

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought 2 mac book (one for me and one for my wife)

Look great work great. Except that I can't connect on the net wireless. I haven't been to figure it out yet. I bought an airport extreme router. But it didn't seem to work (a defect maybe) So I tried my D-link. I work well but with cable. I can't see my wireless network.

Any tips on how to fix that and a few good links for a mac newbie?

Ok. You have a Airport base station? Good. I'm guessing you already have a internet connection, seeing as your posting. What you need to do is plug the internet cable (its called an ethernet cable in most cases) into the Airport base station. Take the end that you plug into your computer and plug it into the airport. Then turn off your modem (The thing that allows you to get on the internet now) and turn it back on. This seems pointless but you need to do it. This will allow the airport to connect to the internet. Once you have the base station working, its a piece of cake. It's easy to set it up on the computer. You should have a thing that looks like a little fan in the top right of your screen. Click on that and find your network. You're on!

These links will be helpful. You should have gotten the first one with the Airport.

If you have questions just PM or reply to this thread.

Hope that helped.

ok,

i Can't make the airport work even with the cable pluged in.
So i guess it is the problem. I still can't make my d-link work wireless.

I'm working on it.

OSX 10.5 is it leopard or tiger?

by the way, I read the owner manual of the airport. and the orange light don't open. Acording to the manual the router is not pluged in. But it is, the green light behind the router are opened.

10.5 is Leopard. It's the newest version. It just came out a couple of months ago.

You said that your Airport isn't working. It's very unlikely that there is a problem with the actual device. It's probably that you plugged a cable in the wrong spot or something. There is a lot to mess up when you're setting up a wireless network. Tell me what you have done so far.

thanks a lot for the help guys, I really appreciate it. Now the dlink work wireless, but I had to reset it. I will secure it again later today.

for the airport, the light in front of it doesn't open. I pluged all the cable in, I'm sure they are at the right place. I tried to reset it, I tried to the modem. I haven't been able to make it work so far.
Is it possible to have some kind of incompatibility between the modem and the router?

by the way, my mac os is in french and I am not used to it, so I might have some problems to find folders and other things if you try to help me. But I should be able to find it.

I downloaded msn for mac. I had to restart my computer because I installed some update and I can't find it.
Where do you find programs you installed?

I know it's a stupid questions but...I can't find it

Look in the applications folder for MSN, though I use Adium for Mac.

The status light isn't even coming on the airport base station? No light indicates that the unit isn't getting power (or is defective or has a defective LED). If the base station's light were flashing amber this would indicate a problem connecting to the network or internet.

I called apple and it seem that the airport is defective. I will go change it for a new one tomorrow.

Take it back and use the dlink. I have a bunch of the Airports at my school. They are easy to set up and use, but not worth the money in my opinion. I use the dlink at home. Works great. Another you need to check, is to make sure your Appletalk is active, as well as your TCP/IP is set to DHCP. At work I set mine to a static IP, but at home it's dynamic. Nothing will work if your connection doesn't allow static IP's. This is probably not your problem, but it's something to be aware of when you're troubleshooting in the future.

The reason I wanted to use the airport is the usb connector. I need and external hard drive on network (the hard on the mac book is way too small for my needs). I checked for lan drive, but it was cheaper to buy a regular hard drive with the airport. Also it will be easier to set up a printer on my network.

You mounted the .dmg file and took the contents to the applications folder? Just open what you moved there and it's done. Installation is quite different than on a PC. It's already installed.

Yeah. That's a good idea. I see. Well what I said still applies with the tcp/ip and all that. These MacBooks don't have big HD's. I'm a little disappointed myself.
