I've always wanted to be able to. Now I can. It's only 28.8KB speed, but it's pretty reliable and quick. Looks like I can get internet anywhere I have cell service without extra hardware. Awesome!
Anyone else use their cell like this?

Anyone else use their cell like this? | How do you actually do this? Cable between the headset jack and the audio in/out of your PC? |

Like this old thing?
No, it's a data cable and some drivers, and it works great. It is like a dial up connection, though.

| | | | Make sure you are allowed to do this. Some carriers make a clear distinction that data transfer allowances do not imply transfers when used as a modem. There was that story a few months ago about some guy running up tens of thousands of dollars in fees because he was using his phone as an unrestricted modem. He had an unlimited data transfer plan, and thought it was ok. Be wary.... |

bc | Oh, this is too. The thing is, dialup modems could handle 28.8, but conditions were never perfect enough to sustain that. This thing is fast, but definitely not as fast as my broadband.

You can tether your phone and laptop to use the highspeed data connection like 3G or CDMA Rev A. this is usually charged as an extra feature but if you can get into the service and programming menus then you can disable NAI and the network doesnt know whether you are a phone or laptop. They will cut you off if you use more than 5G of data per month.
I am posting from my laptop tethered to my phone as we speak

Now with 3G (UMTS/HSPDA), I connect to the internet with a 2.8mbps bandwidth from anywhere. That's how I still browse Talkbass when I'm at the military base.

First off you need to get the pc to recognize the phone as a modem. download the nessicary drivers check the motorola site or the verizon site.
then set up a dial up connection on your pc with this info
phone number: #777
user name: yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
as long as everything is kosher that should work if not there may be more mods needed.
Check in the device manager and see if it recognizes your phone as a cdma modem after you connect it. you may have to pop out your mem card as well to keep it out of mass storage mode.
let me know if this works.
