I was kicked out... and wasn't mad!

After seeing some threads about band problems, well I remembered a few of mine. When I was 14, I guess I was already considered one of the best bassist in the local under 18 punk/metal/pop teen angst scene. Mind you this didn't take a lot, most bassist at the time were either guitarist, or kids who looked cool. Just all my formal teachings from piano, woodwinds, brass, etc really gave me an edge I guess. Especially after Cliff Burton, bass solos were the rage, and I could do them just borrowing some riffs I learned on violin, another from piano, some jazzy rhythms, thinking like a horn player when soloing, nothing flashy just cool sounding and again this was to kids who felt pro after learning to play Blitzkrieg Bop, didn't take much to impress.

Well the more I progressed on trombone especially the more I looked for gigs with horns and so forth. I was becoming busier and busier and missed a whole month of gigs with this band.

They had the hardest time finding someone I was told, and they just said the band dynamic wasn't there with other players, again granted the cool kids who happened to have a bass factor XD.

So when I finally did show up to practice one day, and I found, I was replaced. Worst off, he was using MY BASS AND AMP. Some kid with spikey hair and a greasy looking fake leather jacket. At first I was mad. I knew I had missed many gigs, and I told them go find someone who can fill in those gigs, but not my place. I mean I was one of the original kids from middle school in this group.

It was a bit awkward but I remember the guitarist just going something "Oh great! You're here, this is Andrew he's the new bassist, um he doesn't know how to play, and the bass is out of tune, can you tune it? You know teach him stuff, go through the solos. Can he just play all the songs with open strings?" I just laughed my ass off. I just asked for my gear and left after. At first I was a bit shocked, but I just thought it was funny. They pulled a sex pistols on me and got someone who fit the look. I didn't anywho, I was the average D&D looking nerd with glasses .

Anywho I always found that humorous. Anywho have any similar stories to share?

I think with your attitude like that you won't be keeping too many gigs.

Committing to a band takes more than talent and turning up when you feel like it, IMHO.

You missed a month of gigs, and they didn't put a boot in your butt on your way out? Lucky you.

Guys? He was 14 at the time. I don't know very many dependable 14 year olds. Hell, I don't think 14 year olds are supposed to be reliable.

That too. Missing gigs isn't that big of a deal at 14. I wasn't serious either. And yeah, we absolutely had 'band drama,' where people would be replaced for silly reasons.
