My Dad had a 454 casull revolver.
We went to the range and he told me to watch out cause it kicks like a mule.
He wasn't kidding. It went straight up when I fired it.

so then I will have the largest barrel of them all.
but that's pretty awesome.

Who ever set those people up is a douche, they obviously A. don't understand it's a very very powerful cartridge (.577 Tyrannosaur iirc) in what looks to be an underweight rifle (can't tell if it has proper mercury recoil suppression units in the stock) B. and obviously have no idea how to properly fire a rifle. One guy holds it several inches in front of his shoulder for heavens sake. There are a handful of people in the world who can handle the level of recoil generated by the bigger elephant rifles (especially the modern higher pressure variations) and tricking newbs into trying it so they get hurt is very much not cool.

I prepare noobs as best I can when I take them shooting the first time. My goal is always to get a "Whoa! That wasn't bad at all!" rather than a "Holy crap! I didn't know it was that bad...No more for me..."
Some people get their kicks in pretty stupid ways

I even use a pad with my Mosin Nagant...and it's not near as big a rifle. After about 12 rounds with the steel buttstock end beating on your shoulder, you're ready for a break.

Dave | Yeah, but that's the point of owning a Nagant. That 7.62x54 is just a satisfying round to shoot
Plus, it's less of a punch and more of a shove. Doesn't hurt as much as, say, a .30-06, IMO.

Also, I always like Kates' summary... "In these other passages Freud associates retarded sexual and emotional development not with gun ownership, but with fear and loathing of weapons." |

That being said, the recoil impetus is far far different. Partly because .50's are not intended to be fired from the off hand position, and as such are generally somewhere in the vicinity of 30 lbs or more. The perception is more of a stout shove against the shoulder, where as the lighter rifles feel more like getting punched. |

| | (V) [;,,;] (V) | | Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: Michigan | | My dad is a gunsmith, so I've tried out a few different rifles. When I got the opportunity to fire a .50BMG rifle (the giant military bolt-action rifle), the recoil wasn't bad at all due to the construction of the butt. The most painful thing I've fired was a .460 Weatherby Magnum. It bruised up my shoulder pretty well, and I know how to shoot. Come to think of it, it did a number on my dad's shoulder as well. With big revolvers, you just need to be ready for it. Stuff like the .44 Magnum, .454 Casull, and .500 S&W are jumpy, but certainly controllable. Not to mention the revolvers that fire them tend to be massively heavy.
The most powerful thing I own is a No.1 Mk.III* SMLE in .303 British
