If Ikea is anything of an accurate representation of how things are in Sweden, Sweden must be a pretty incredible country. Who else loves them some Ikea? |

| | Working on successful. Got the first syllable... | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Huddinge, Sweden | | | I live within cycling distance of the first IKEA store ever opened, so I've seen and used my fair share of IKEA stuff. Back in the 70's the stuff wasn't really very good. There was invariably stuff like screws or hinges missing in the packages.
Today it's a completely different deal. I can't remember when I last had even a single tiny nail missing. I've noticed that those who complain about the quality tend to be the same people who complain about poor assembly instructions. Which to me hints at the real issue: Some people just don't have the skills needed.
Now, you do get what you pay for. Some of the cheapest stuff doesn't hold up that well and won't fit together quite as perfectly. But generally it's breath-takingly precise.

With that said, I think I've largely outgrown my jonesing for IKEA products as I've reached an income level that allows me to be more selective about the products I purchase. There definitely was, however, a time I was completely enthralled with a walk through one of their massive showrooms.

Pretty much every light fixture inside and outside our home is from Ikea. We have a few rooms left to upgrade. My wife and I both really dig the lighting options and the prices blow Home Depot and Lowes away.
We have a few 2X2 Expedits around the house. My wife really likes those too, and they are easy to put together. Other pieces of furniture in there has a real cheap look to it that we prefer to avoid, but they also have nicer stuff too.
Two things I never fail to see at my local Ikea....
1) Kids/baby section is full of white trash couples arguing over crib colors.
2) Lots and lots of Asian people.

I kinda hate IKEA, but my GF loves it .
Now that I have more experience about them, it seems that it's only the particle board and MDF I hate in general that has made me hate IKEA as a result.
For our upcoming home project, the majority of the furniture will come from IKEA if it's massive wood. Almost all the hardware will come from there, I'll just manufacture the cabinets, shelves and stuff from massive planks.
So in a way, I kinda have to love IKEA as well .
Regards

I'm not a good consumer. I don't like to change my furniture every time I move, I don't want a hip living room that will be outdated in 2 years. I like old, massive furniture that last a lifetime at the very least.
Now a bass cab made out of an Ikea closet, you're giving me ideas. |

I still live at home, but my parents ran a furniture manufacturing business for years. Most of the stuff around our house is over 10 years old and built like a tank.

Not just furniture, a lot of kitchen stuff too. They got a nice faux-leather couch. I think it even came assembled. Not sure though. |

The cheapest particle board Ikea uses is particularly horrendous. A couple I know bought some of those cheap living room tables they have, and their dog chewed the legs half way through in a matter of weeks. Plus, it's so soft, that knock it into something and you'll have a dent that'll fit your thumb in it.
But as always, you need to carefully look into what you're buying. Their glass- and metalware is ok, although somewhat flimsy at times, and they have a lot of small things like lighting and fabrics that are pretty cool and cheap. However, when you look at the solid wood products, I think they're around the normal prices for such stuff.
