Let's do it in January sometime. WHO CARES if it's not in December????? It's not about the date!
As for past memories, don't let them keep you down. My sister passed away some years back. Her birthday was December 18th. The first couple of Christmas times afterwards I felt kind of like you. It almost didn't seem "right" to celebrate with her not here. But then it just hit me. SHE would want me to celebrate. You can't live in bad memories forever. I can't tell you how to feel (and wouldn't try). But I think you'll snap out of that part eventually.
Hang in there. The Christmas blues get us all at some point. Sorry you are feeling that way right now.
By the way, do you have Skype? When I can't actually BE where my family is, it still helps me feel like I'm there a little bit to do a video call. I know it's not the real thing. But it's FREE if you already have a web cam. And a really cheap gift for your folks would be to get them one if they don't have one. They start at $20 or so. Just a random thought.
Either way. Merry Christmas even if it's not so Merry this year. They will get better. | This is a great response. And I really appreciate the way the OP worded his post. I've grown quite weary of "I'm sick of Christmas," "Christmas music sucks," "The holidays are a drag," etc. At least the OP has a truly thoughful reason for feeling the way he's feeling, and he's not just using Christmas as an excuse to rant. I've found that people who rant about the holiday season tend to rant about most things. But I digress...the post I quoted directly answers the OP as well as anything I could add.

Granted I'm not anti holidays, thanksgiving, and easter, along with several birthdays are huge deals for me.
I just feel that the holiday is at an inconvient time of year(stormy, expensive to fly, commercialism rammed down our throats).
There's also an aspect of it being a put down to people that are alone or separated from there families.
Again I don't hate christmas, I've had mostly pleasant experiences, it's just simply a matter of not wanting to cheapen the memories I do have with less pleasant ones, or ones where the holiday can be truly embraced.
So does anyone else do something similar, or atleast celebrates christmas outside of the standard window. Dec 23-27. | Christmas is to commemorate the birth of Christ. That's it. There's been a lot of things added on that have nothing to do with it, but were added later on in various socities where Christianity is the religion observed by the majority. So, if you go to a non-Christian country, December 25th is nothing special. People treat it like Americans would treat August 3rd, just another day. No decorations, no special music, no sales, no heavy holiday traffic, no office parties, etc. You can celebrate Christmas without the commercialized fanfare.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Take care.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Take care. | Actually, December 25th was celebrated long before Christianity or the idea of Jesus Christ were around. Its actually a Pagan holiday that celebrates the rising of the sun, three days after the shortest day of the year (winter solstice).
Also, I happen to celebrate August 3rd just about every year, because my birthday is on the 2nd, and sometimes thats a Thursday.
