I need to finish this gun project

No collectable guns were harmed in this project! I bought an old Mosin Nagant for 50.00 a long time ago. Got my dad to cut and crown the barrel at 18''. Found a B-Square scope mount (I'm not crazy about them, but it works) and added a red dot sight. Got a guy to turn down the bolt. My plan was to bead blast the finish and swap the stock. I am considering simply sanding/filling the gouges and painting now and cold blueing the metal. It's a POS not intended for hunting but for use at home. I saw it this morning and said to myself, "hey, you need to finish that and the hundred other projects you have lying around!"

It's not a POS, it's relic'd. Adds vintage mojo.

I don't necessarily think it's going to be a tactical weapon, but it would be an awesome short-range deer blaster or something to that effect.

Peace,
Greg

Think of it as a white trash "scout" rifle.

See a sawed-off barrel on either of those?

Take a good close look at the piece in the B&W pic. Not 18", but also not the full 24" the M40 was issued with. Back then the USMC M40 was little more than a parkerized 700ADL with a 3x9 Redfield, and a lot of them got "accurized" by individual unit armorers at the request of the guys who carried them. That was also a time when most shots were made inside 500 yards and stealth in the jungle was often more important than the 1000+ yard tack driving ability so valued today. More than a few 24" barrels were shortened a bit to make them less snag prone.

I have not seen an official USMC issue piece since late 78 so I have no clue as to the current hot setup, but the 3 old M40's in the armory of the 10th Marine Regiment when I was there all had different barrel lengths and trigger pulls. One of them even had about an inch of the butt cut off.

I love projects like this, get that barrel crowned by a competent gunsmith, and finish that puppy...

There are a few "bake on" finishes that companies like Brownells sell...

Aluma Hyde that thing...

Get you a nice camo stencil and a couple of cans, and camouflage that thing... the deer will never see it coming...

My father is a retired machinist and has his own lathe. He's an ace at that sort of stuff. It's has a very nice crown. I don't know about hunting with it (except short range stuff.)

If it's got a good crown, then slap a finish on it and call it done.

The Aluma-Hyde stuff is pretty cool. I once had a cheap Norinco 1911 clone that had some slack in the slide to the point it rattled a little bit when shook. Rather than bend the slide inward to eliminate the rattle, I "Aluma-hyded" the frame and the slide... no more rattle... and it looked awesome in OD green.

Your "white trash scout rifle" would be cool as hell with a good camo coating on it...

Be sure to "bed" the stock properly too..

I stripped mine with oven cleaner, rinsed with a hose, and dried. Then I used rub on walnut stain and finished with satin polyurethane spray. (The dings in the wood get dark and add character) Looks great!

Didn't need any blueing.
