Today I announced my retirement after 38 years in the geotechnical engineering business, 23 years with my current company. I'm going to miss all the great people there, and it's a bit of an emotional strain, but I'm going to take a couple months off, then find a new career, probably in education.
It's a very strange feeling, because I'll be unemployed and looking for a job for the first time in 38 years. I don't have to worry about money, so I have time to look around for something just right for me. I already have a couple offers, but not exactly what I'm looking for. We'll see what happens when it hits the street.
I've received some very nice e-mails from employees after the announcement, and it makes me feel that I helped some people along with their careers. It's been a tough job, but the relationships make it all worthwhile.
This will be fun. That is all.

I think you should take a job in a complaint department somewhere and just respond to all complaints as if you are on TB OT.

This has been in the works for over a year, but the economy made it seem unlikely until I struck a mutually beneficial deal with the other shareholders. I love this company, and they will keep an office for me in the building for the foreseeable future. It's cool all the way around.
BTW, the reason I had to wait 'til today is that I had to get final approval from the Board of Directors (which I chair) for the deal before I could announce it to the company. Our Board meeting was today. I didn't want to post it here before the rest of the company knew.
