These are what Charlie Hunter plays. The down payment could get me Carl Thompson! Holy Crap! That pretty much sums it up.

Have you priced a DB lately? Chump change here compared to a Good DB. Try a good cello or a violin sometime as well.

I'd hate to know what he'd charge for an acoustic bass.

He should start charging people for visiting his site, too.

Just saw this: http://www.contrabass.co.uk/csbasses.htm. I'm sure there are more expensive ones as well.

I kinda get the double bass thing to a point. It is a heck of a lot more wood. But still, kind of over kill. But I'm sure people say the same about the price of dinner at the sushi bar or most of the restaurants I've cooked at. Product costs, labor and skill are hard to convey to the normal or even more savvy customers.

That's kinda hard to quantify, innit?

BTW I think this thread should be in Miscellaneous. It's music related discussion.

When I was shopping for my DB a few years ago, at one of the shops there was a fully carved German bass (don't remember the maker), used, for $12,000.

A lot more wood, yes, but also more labor since assembly is a lot more involved.

So is that actually really expensive? I say this because I have precious little idea of how pricey these are supposed to be. In the link I provided, there's a couple DBs around £25,000, that'd be around $29,000.

And I actually wonder how much of a part 'used' plays in this: aren't old, well made DBs really sought after? They're bound to be 'used'. For example don't tell me this circa 1840 bass is 'new'

*Imagines a DB veteran reading this post and laughing his head off *

If I could move this thread, I'd do that myself.

going to TBOT with music stuff is like watching the video of the Cramps playing the Napa Valley Mental Institution. Sure there's four musicians there, but there's 300 legally insane people there too.

Nor did I... my fiancee has, though, and I'll be eternally envious of her for that fact.
