| If you are ever the victim of identity theft, it can cost you a lot more than $25 to get your credit record straightened out. But if you are careful and keep an eye on your credit report, you can accomplish the same thing for free.
Without going in to the long and boring details of how my wife and I were victimized, it cost us $350 to file some papers through a state agency to get them to deal with an obnoxious credit agency (to whom we really didn't owe money). For the most part we could have done it ourselves, but we just didn't know what needed to be done and we waited too long to start.
My advice: check all the charges on your credit card statement. If there are bogus charges, notify the credit card company, and file a police report. If the charges don't go away, follow up with them. If that bank gets sold, make sure the new bank gets the information about the theft (that was where we screwed up). Get the free copies of your credit reports every year. Make sure they're correct, and add notations if you disagree with anything reported.
So I voted for carrots.
