I'm just finding out how true this is! The general rule of thumb for most of us is if you want to buy something another piece of gear has to go. So I went and bought a bass because it was a great deal and I really, really like it. I thought that I had a pass on this one because I have sold off a lot of gear and comic books over the last 6 months. Hell, she even get very friendly with me when I sold off a majority of my comics because they took up so much room. So I figured I could get away buying a bass first and then worry about selling another off. Nope, didn't happen. She's not really angry with me but she's not really happy with me either. She's more annoyed I think. I've hidden the bass so she won't see it until I move a few other pieces. Hopefully we'll be so busy with Thanksgiving that she'll forget about her annoyance with me for a few days.

Anyone else been in the same situation?

There was a time when my wife questioned my musical equipment purchases. It all ended one day when she asked why I needed another bass. I answered with a question of my own..."Why do you need another pair of black shoes?" She quickly turned and left the room. She may roll her eyes as I bring new gear in, but she doesn't ask questions. In reality, she also knows that my gear collection is pretty much a revolving door and most (admittedly, not all) of my purchases are pretty smart buys.

A very interesting little read- thank you.

I wouldn't give up my girl for anything. She just drives me crazy every now and then.

The gf is not much of a shoe freak luckily. Her whole attitude is if you're using something then you keep it; if not out it goes. You only get what you need and use. I'm the pack rat.

My wife and I used to argue about this stuff but we came to a very simple arrangement. I have a budget. I can buy, sell or trade all I like so long as I stay within my predefined budget. She has one as well, but hers typically applies to clothes.

There are, of course, exceptions. Raises, bonuses, etc. (for either of us) generally warrant some addition to the budget. However, this does require a discussion, but it's usually pretty easy to come to an agreement.

It's not a perfect solution but it works pretty well for us. Just two people trying to find a mature way to deal with their childishness.

I buy basses, the lady buys guitars.
Seems about even to me. We're both just going to be just above broke for the rest of our lives.

I was always told buying a new bass or amp was "pissing money away." To some extent mom or dad were right about that. Now that I'm older, if all my bills are paid and I have enough saved for a new bass then I'll buy one providing it wont leave my bank account tapped out.

Maybe the economy has something to do with it. A year ago, I would not have run a minor gear purchase past my spouse, but I might do so today, depending on the expense. That's how it is. We are both quite frugal.

When I decided that I would like to buy a new upright, you can bet that I discussed it with her. She agreed that it was OK. But I know that my bass fund just vanished with the stock market crash even if the money was not in any specific account. It would be irrational of me to assume that it's business as usual with my gear budget.

my mom gets pissed whenever i come home with anything
I have gotten some bad deals, but lately they've all been pretty good

Her "rule" is that i cannot buy anything unless i sell the old one
But, i stumbled upon way too good deals to pass up, so i bought before i sold
I still havent sold everything, though i would like to get rid of it

Now that ive gotten a 4 string and 5 string and the head/cab and effects pedals i want
Ive moved on to a new venture, recording gear

Ive wanted to be an Engineer/Producer since High School, so im starting to acquire the gear i would need to begin working.

Needless to say, if she even sees a note with a product written on it, she freaks out, forget walking in the house with something.

She gets upset that I spend money, but my philosophy is, i wont be able to afford it forever, so get it while i can.

She doesnt like that i work so little and get paid as much as i do. Haha

Oh well, its my life, my money that im working to get. Im getting what i want

I see there's no need to ask if you ever managed to raise your "graids".

Beleive it or not if I just replace the Cirrus I sold (best feeling bass I ever played) I think my gass will be cured. After flipping out basses monthly (I once had 2 basses arrive on the same day) I am fine with the basses in my sig and a Cirrus and haven't wanted to buy anything else in a good 6 montsh, maybe even 9 months.
