What you're effectively saying is all stores should have security staff. I think being followed sends you a bit of a message, whereas checking bags makes no accusation of any individual.
If you then object to being followed about the store you're objecting to store security period. Since you clearly wish to be held above suspicion you can't not object to being followed.
How would your store combat shoplifting?

You see it as them looking at YOU as someone looking to steal from them. I and others don't take it personally. I take as a sad reflection of the fact that people do indeed steal, and this is what needs to be done in order for them to somewhat protect themselves.
Something that WOULD and does at times bother me is being followed around a store, after being singled out, and it's happened many times. And I get checked, frisked, and bag searched just about every time I get on a plane. Pulled over by cops too, and drug and alcohol tested even though I don't drink or do any drugs at all. No idea why.
At a bag check they're checking everybody's bag so I really do, as mentioned earlier, just consider it a convenience. I don't like carry stuff around. |

"You can be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes! You say.. "Steve.. how can I be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes?" First.. get a million dollars. Now.. you say, "Steve.. what do I say to the tax man when he comes to my door and says, 'You.. have never paid taxes'?" Two simple words. Two simple words in the English language: "I forgot!" How many times do we let ourselves get into terrible situations because we don't say "I forgot"? Let's say you're on trial for armed robbery. You say to the judge, "I forgot armed robbery was illegal.""

Also remember you are a guest in their store and they can demand you leave at anytime. And no, none of your "Rights" are being violated. Food for thought.
