If you were diagnosed with HIV would you continue your higher education ? I would have serious doubts about spending what little time I had left in academics.

I would. Living the life normally is exactly what I'd do if I got HIV.

Modern medicine can pretty much stop HIV if you can afford the drugs. Look at Magic Johnson. He's lived with HIV for what, 17+ years?

from all I've read and seen, "little time left" is likely inaccurate. There are folks that have lived with it for 20 years or more. I'd definitely continue higher ed.

Yes, and maybe go into scientific research if I can.

If I got HIV, that would mean my lower education failed me so............I'd probably give up the education thing and go fishing.

If I was diagnosed with HIV, that means I've been screwing around way too much during college. Anyone with a decent set of morals should be able to avoid STDs.

Yep. I think MM needs to do better background checks for his pseudo-philosophical one-liner-posts. May I suggest "aggressive brain tumour", it's the new HIV.

well HIV can be contracted through more ways than sex. HIV cannot always be detected in donated blood and recipients of transfusions can be infected. The probability is low, but it is still there.

True, then of course a person would be stigmatized by the same sort of thinking in the post you replied to.

You can live for years with HIV, and why would I want to give up something I enjoy?

Stupid question, IMO.

That's a pretty bold statement. Who is the arbiter of decency and morals?

HIV is no longer a death sentence like it used to be. I would see no reason to stop my education.

Nope.. Time to get back to basics when something of that power happens in your life. Someone is trying to wake you up.. time to make some changes.

How about healthcare providers who get it from needlesticks/blood exposure? Little kids who get it from their infected mothers through being born? A devoted significant other who catches it from his/her partner who has been cheating unprotected?

Not yet, but I'm dual enrolling at Community College full time, so I'm pretty much going to be in college for the next year.

Morals are the modes of conduct that are taught and accepted as embodying principles of right and good.

It seems to me that everyone should be the arbiter of their own morals, even a 16 year old. Drawing the line at unprotected sex or sharing needles is a fairly low and simple standard don't you think?? You don't catch HIV from someone sneezing on you. If you get it from the hospital, you'll own the hospital, then you can take your education at your own pace

In the context of his statement, it seems he is suggesting that anyone who gets STDs is immoral. That's just silly. We all know countless friends and family who screwed around in college and threw caution to the wind, but are moral in our own personal view and even mainstream society's.
