The "Ignore" function is..

Sign in to disble this ad
..the technological equivalent of sticking one's fingers in the ears and going, "NYAH NYAH NYAH I CAN'T HEAR YOU NYAH NYAH NYAH I'M NOT LISTENING!" I have self-control, discernment and an intellect. I'm a big boy. Why should I have a program do what I'm perfectly capable of doing by myself? As far as I'm concerned it's for the emotionally immature.

Discuss.

I can agree with that sentiment. Its easy to walk away from a fight, even easier to walk away from one on the internet. Theres no need to be childish and put someone on ignore, that person may later have some useful information I can obtain.

There are a few on here that the scroll on my mouse seems to speed up when I see their name. Nothing against them or anything it's just like that friend who you don't dislike, you just don't want to bother with conversations with them at a party and steer clear.

Stop shouting at me or I'm going to ignore you.

I disagree. It's not equivalent to "nyah nyah I can't hear you", it's equivalent to a "get the .... out of my sight" that
1) actually works,
2) doesn't offend anyone.
Surreal, no?

Kids go "nyah nyah" to invoke rage in the other kid. This is entirely unlike that; the blocked person doesn't even know he/she is blocked. Imagine being a non-smoker that can block smokers from his/her immediate surroundings without causing any inconvenience to the smokers. It's a handy tool.

BTW I haven't blocked anyone.

Agree. At the very least it should be a two-way block.

Friend? I don't do social networking, if you're talking Facebook or something like that. I also have no real friends, as they are all thieving backstabbers.

On a serious note, why not. Doesn't affect me, right? I'm not sure what this "buddy list" thing even is.

No idea on the buddy list either. I'm ever so lonely after killing all my other friends in horrible and disgusting ways. PM me your address and the address of other loved ones and we'll like hang out and stuff. I promise not to stab you in the back as that's not my style. It's usually in the spleen with a rusty butter knife.

Ah, you've made a cardinal mistake here.

You're assuming I've got loved ones! They are the backstabbingest of them all. They will be your friends, look after you when you're sick.. You get to trust them, and as soon as you put your guard down they start conspiring how to take everything from you. At first you are not so sure, but the clues get increasily common. They smile and everything, but you can see through the deceipt. You suddenly stop sleeping to protect yourself from being stabbed while sleeping - and it's only a matter of time before you realize you need to stab first.. STAB! STAB!

^^^ This is my take on it. When somebody has repeatedly shown themselves to be infuriating and unconstructive, I put them on ignore. I don't make a production about it, they just "go away", which is all I want from that kind of person. Sure, I could just overlook their posts, but what's the diff? How is it immature to overlook them one way versus overlooking them another way?

I've never encountered anyone on this board worthy of the iggy bin.
Even the most abrasive have given me a laugh from time to time if for no other reason than the pride they take in their own ignorance.

Besides, if they where on iggy, I might miss the inevitable hammer of Thor coming down on them by the hand of Pacman. The man has raised fly swatting to an internet art form.

This is so awesome. We are so similar in our paranoias and homicidal tendencies. As Humphrey Bogart said "This could be the beginning of a beautifully horrific and gore filled friendship" .. or something like that.

I AGREE.

I am one person's ignore list, the conversation that resulted in my getting the "ignore" was a tepid one a best, it was in the thread about the police officer that shot the handcuffed young man in the subway.

No, the ignore feature is like AdBlock but for users who annoy you, it prevents your screen from getting clogged up with unwanted noise. I've never used it on this site but I have on a couple others to block spammers and trolls who don't wish to participate in an discussion and are only there to spam or disrupt. I never have to use it on here because this place is well moderated. I didn't even know there was an ignore feature on here actually (probably because I've never had the reason to look for one!)

Hmm I guess such a feature might be useful at the forums on harmony central... That place is unusable due to lack of moderation. Idiots post there without any regard for the forum topics, because there are no consequences. They could benefit from a moderator who would just move every off-topic post to its proper forum (which would shuffle about 95% of the threads there)

Anyway, TB is much superior to HC. The mods and admins here do a great job. Sure, they aren't perfect, but no one can be perfect.

Still, the ignore feature CAN be abused in the way the original poster described, by people who don't like opinions that contradict their own.

I've been aware of this "protection" function for quite a while now... I've even been tempted to use it on one particular individual's posts that really bug me.. however; he'll someday "come around".. everyone (pretty much) matures eventually. . even him...
