I got to thinking about why some threads go off the rails (I was reading one here at the time where people were making fantastic claims for mediocre basses), and the old statistic that 80% of drivers rate themselves above average came to mind. Oh, that's not urban legend, either.
This led me to this article. Well written, well researched, and, to my surprise, an effect with a number of different manifestations.
If I were a cynic, I'd say this completely explains the Internet.

Merely having the ability to type and a valid email address entitles someone to post on an internet forum. This is true regardless of actual experience in anything other than spewing one's opinion over the bandwidth. The opinions of the 15 year old kid in his bedroom have the same weight as those of a 45 year old professional who as earned all of his experience the hard way.
Everyone thinks his opinion / rig / gear / life / education is the best, and will, no matter what. All of this is exascerbated by poor reading comprehension by users. If something is repeated often enough, it becomes truth, no matter the subject. Just because someone says something, or has an opinion on something does not mean that it is valid or true, or that the post has any merit (or that it does NOT have merit).
One possibility would be to have a ranking system, which would be some function of experience, merit of posted materials, qualifications of individual, etc. As an example, on this forum, we could instantly see that difference between the individual playing the local coffee shop for a tip jar three times a year or the one flying all over the country to play major events (and earn major money), and judge whether the post has any validity or not.
But, then again, someone would inevitably be offended because their opinion was of lower importance than that of someone else (GASP!!).
Until then, I'm going to pat myself on the back and imagine that I made a positive contribution to TB.

It sounds like yet another manifestation of the widespread ability of people to believe exactly what they choose to, regardless of any available evidence. Sheesh, I've even seen comments that people have some sort of "right" to do so.

I'm not pointing any fingers at anyone specific, but a good number of posters recently have been very illustrative of this concept.
