I'm finally back to work!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been laid off since January 23, 2009 and couldn't believe it when my old boss called me up last Monday asking if I'd be interested in coming back to work. I said yes and started back last Thursday in my old job working as an inspector for a CNC machine shop.

I was finally starting to see some signs this year that things were beginning to turn around a bit for this economy. From the time I got laid off until this past January, only 35 employers loooked at my resume online and I got no calls. Since this past January an additional 70 employers have looked at my resume, I got 4 calls and had 2 interviews.

Feels good knowing that I'm earning a paycheck again!

Congrats. My dad just got laid off (well last month). He works in the construction industry, last year he was one of the few held on, but things are tighter this winter. Hopefully it won't be as long term as your situation though. I think he said business usually starts to pick up in march/april so with any luck he'll be back in the garage by then.

Interesting job!! I worked as a machinist all my life. Before going full time with knives, I setup and ran various CNC machines and, for a while, was the manager of the companies inspection department I still fill in when when their nightshift supervisor goes on vacation several times a year.

Good news, man. I'm sure it's a hell of a relief having been out of work for over a year.

Awesome news. This gives hope to me that I'll be working again soon. Think I'll apply to a few places.

Congrats !! I actually just got called back to my job as well. I was laid off from an arch/eng firm in July of 2009 and got the call to come back last month. It's a good feeling.

This is very true, especially in a manufacturing environment

Great news. I quit my job last September to go back to school and now that I have some interviews lined up for summer internships, I talked to my old boss to see if I could use him for a reference. He said yes and if I didn't get a job I was welcome to come back and run a crew for him in the summer (construction). Only good employees get called or asked back, so take that as a huge complement.

In California things aren't so bright that anyone is reaching for their sunglasses. I own a retail store and the sales are down in the 20% range from last year, and that wasn't so a good year either. There are parking spaces open on my busy street everyday and that is another sign of the weakness of our economy.

I'm very glad to hear of the manufacturing recall of employees and more personally that TBers are going back to paycheck.

I am piss*d that we had a financial crises on the order of a 9.0 earthquake, and a RESCUE but not the REFORM. Historians are going to look us as freakin' idiots for bailing them out and not stopping credit swaps and derivatives sales that account for much of the Wall Street's 10,000+ numbers.

I worked in the CNC industry for 4 years, from the way things looked (from my perspective as someone young), the industry seemed to be uninterested in any crosstraining or investments in young hardworkers. Usually because they just can't afford any downtime. And recently such a surplus of older experienced workers willing to work for lesser pay.

I left the industry almost a year ago because hard times made the company cut back hours, and I was losing money working there, they weren't willing to give me that extra help to get my red seal (Canada's Industry Standard Certificate).

I thought about going to school when I moved back to my home province, but figured it's a losing battle no matter what.

Oh yeah, I was VERY upset when I got laid off for a while. I can tell you in all honesty that I've always been very responsible with money and I had no credit card debt at all. Didn't fall for this sub-prime loan crap, have always lived a very modest lifestyle.....and I lost my job because of the stupidity and greed of others?!?!?! What saved me was two things: First, I've remained single since my divorce in '93. Two, due to making good money and modest living while working I saved a lot of money. Wasn't rich, but I had no financial worries either.

But I'm glad to be earning a paycheck again and I'm also glad to see that others have noticed an upswing as well. (Good for you too, BB75!!). I just hope it continues for others who are unemployed.
