I tried to fix the registry, which was corrupted, and all the other routs as described in Wikipedia...to no avail.
I had to reformat the drive and start over. Thankfully, after installing Norton I migrated important stuff off the drive (music, photos, some studioware) and then got to work. I gave it a clean sweep. Not an easy process. Google "reformatting HD with Windows XP" (if that is the OS you're using) and get the processes if that is the route to take. You can't format the drive like you used to with Win 98...
Good luck. |

Go to 'Add/Remove Programs' at control panel, and check for any suspicious crap instaled there. If you know you didn't install that - try to remove it. Also, check the startup file for evil progs ('Start' -> 'Run...' -> 'msconfig' -> 'Startup tab'). If you see checked boxes which don't do any good, delete that crap directly (there's a path written there too). If it doesn't get removed, Google for help. You'll probably have to modify your registry directly. Again, once you spot what kind of beast you're dealing with, Google is your friend.
Am I the only one for whom the comp just works? I've had only issue only once with some crap called 'antivermins', and got rid of it. Nothing since then, especially since I'm behind a router.

Shouldn't be too much software & tech, prolly a hundred bucks...I see licenced copies of XP w/ SP2 on the Bay for 60 bucks all the time. |

I was wrong in having Norton...I have McCaffe, (Norton just popped into my mind when I was frustrated)
To the others...I'll give the safe mode a try. I was able to get what I want off of the hard drive onto DVD. One last ditch effort before I boot up the recovery disc.
Oh yeah...I don't watch porn. |

Just not in the mood and after searching many threads about the issue...it seems that's the obligatory piece of advice the Mac Men have about every computer problem that a novice computer user comes into contact with. excuse me for beeing a basic noob when it comes to figuring this type of thing out. At least I did search here and elsewhere...but I get a lil confused whe it comes to certain things. Such as registry crap. Otherwise if I had the expendable money i would have gotten a Mac. However with kids, wife, bills, etc.........

Rant off | Then I have to second the Linux advice. I recommend Ubuntu (I use it myself), but you might like kubuntu - it's Ubuntu with a more graphical interface (called KDE) and friendlier to long-time Windows users.
It's a common misconception that PC = Windows, but Linux runs on PC, so you don't need to buy another computer. Linux itself is free. It's lightweight, so you might not have to upgrade your computer as much over the course of a few years (more savings).
You can read about these Linux distributions (Ubuntu, kubuntu, etc.) all over the internet. Even the Wikipedia pages can be pretty helpful to someone who has no previous experience with these systems. The next time your computer gives you any crap (and it probably will), you might just decide to switch. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
