I'm toying with the idea of a lip piercing...

Sign in to disble this ad
I've always liked lip piercings on other people and in more recent times I actually think that it would be a good idea to get one myself.

Problem is that I've been told by a lot of people that these can mess up a lot of job oppotunities, the more so because you can't exactly cover it up.

Has anyone on here found this to be true?

Why are you taking off your clothes during an interview?

People finding it to be true would only be anecdotal evidence anyway. It's just general knowledge that tattoos and piercing aren't exactly business friendly.

I would phrase it something like "It's common sense that exposed tattoos and piercings will probably automatically eliminate you from consideration for certain jobs".

To the OP: You said that you think getting a lip piercing "is a good idea". Can you explain why you feel that way?

Ha, well I think we all know what you meant but I felt compelled to rephrase what you said.

Around here piercings are largely accepted for jobs like waitpersons and cooks in restaurants and such. I think I've seen a Starbucks barista or two with piercings (although I may be misremembering that). I personally don't get why people want to go the conspicuous piercing or tattoo route, but to each his or her own.

Don't do it.. trust me.

We just had a meeting with the department head of the Exercise Physiology program here at school and he said the number 1 tip is to not have any exposed tattoos and earrings. Within reason of course, earrings are an exclusion.

Right, if you choose to do it, make sure you understand the consequences. It's easy to say such things as piercings shouldn't make a difference when it comes to employment, but that's just denying reality. You may never be explicitly told "We won't hire you because of that lip piercing" but the reality is it will affect your chances of landing some jobs.

If you don't mind the hassle, you can always remove it for work. I'm not sure how fast a lip piercing takes to heal. I'm a fast healer, and my ears could grow shut in a couple of days when I had them pierced.

I've thought about a lip piercing more than once, but I know there will be the day I won't want it anymore. I was always worried of having a scar from when the piercing would grow closed after I quit wearing a ring.

This is too employer specific. Don't ask us; ask the employer. Every field is different, but every individual in power of hiring in that field is different, too.

I must be officially old , I see no point in butchering ones face , altough I have tattoos so go figure. I once thought they were the coolest thing on earth

I guess I'm old school. Pierced ears are fine as long as the hole isn't stretched out like the kids seem to do these days.

Other piercings just don't get it for me. Especially facial piercings. Go ahead and get em if you want, but I'm gonna be wondering just exactly how much of a douche you really are the first time I meet you.

You can just take it out. I got my lip pierced 5 years ago. Haven't worn it in 4 yrs, still hasn't closed up. You can barely notice it's there. Mines in the center just below my lip though, not on the side or anything.
But I wouldn't get a piercing if I was actively looking for work though...

Getting your lip pierced will aid you in appearing less conspicuous when your plans to travel back in time to 1996 are successful.
