Question Incoming copyright laws, digital devices, and border crossings

First off, the intent of this thread is to NOT promote illegal pirating of any digital media be it mp3 music or movies.

How is it going to be possible for the authorities to enforce/monitor everyone's digital device such as PDAs, PSPs, and Ipods. Once they do get their hands on them, how can they differenciate between legally purchased/downloaded music from iTunes, music from your personal CD collection, and music stolen from torrent sites like Lim*****.

Music legally purchased and those illegally stolen look identical - unless you access the "properties" of the file. This info, however is not always available (Ipod Shuffle)

This is a huge grey zone.

I've been told that as "proof of ownership" of music files, one may need to produce the album casing/jacket for each album/artist you currently have on your player. As some devices can store literally 100s of songs, how many albums would you need to carry around!

I'm most interested in border crossings, customs, etc. Curious to hear input from fellow Canadians (travelling to US), Americans (customs, border crossings) and worldwide fellow TBers)

Once again, I am not condoning piracy in any form, but...once it's put on your device, how can you tell?

The people that get in trouble for piracy are the ones SHARING the music over the internets for the most part. I am not saying you can't get in trouble for other things, but only people that want to get caught or don't know any better share publicly.

True enough, but the person on the receiving end will also be on the hook, no?

That's where the grey area is, who polices that or has enough time to?

And why should border authorities be wasting their time and travellers' time attempting to enforce ill-founded intellectual property laws. I'm sure that they have far, far more important issues to worry about.... like the "war on drugs"....
