Informative speech about death metal: ideas?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone. In sophomore english, we'll be giving speeches this next week. They're just informative speeches, on anything that we want. Just something that interests us. I'm giving mine on extreme metal styles, which lets me focus on death metal and grindcore mostly.

I'll talk about its unbelievable technicality, speed, about different technics used (blast beats, etc), the vocals, how satan plays a role, and how it's jazz and classical influenced.

I'm having trouble thinking. Can anybody help by listing off some of the playing technics I can speak about, and basically what else I should speak about to give the class a very thorough overview of why this "looked down upon" genre should get more appreciation.

I also already got a very intrigued "OK" by the teacher to speak about this topic: she said I can bring in some actual music examples to play the class. I shouldn't bring in too much stuff (to keep everything short and sweet), but I'd like to bring in some good examples to show the kind of speed and technicality, a good example of different drum technics used, and a good example of vocals and lyrics used in this genre. I'm thinking of basically any song by Braindrill, maybe Origin, and probably "Eaten" by Bloodbath, (the latter being because it's a good clear example of some of the styles of lyrics used). Any other suggestions would be great.

Please don't describe anything as brutal. I hate kids that do that.

And why don't you like Deathcore? It's Death metal and Grindcore mixed. 2 genre's of music you're basing your reporting on lol. Yes, they dress like queers, but the music is good.

First off, sorry if you took offense to my post. But seriously, I'm using brutal as a legitimate adjective. Trust me, I'm not one of those stupid "kids" who says "dude, that's bruuuuuuutal" every two seconds. I rarely use the word, and I mean it when I do.

About deathcore. Maybe what I think of as deathcore is not what it really is. Every deathcore band I've heard has just been hardcore mixed with death metal style vocals. And I can't stand hardcore. There're a few exceptions, but for the most part I hate it. In my eyes (or should I say ears) deathcore is not like grindcore in any way.

But then again, I hate labeling music into every lame little genre. I know what I like and appreciate, but I hate trying to label it as anything.

I hate labeling music too. There are so many sub-genres in metal now-a-days it's ridiculous.

I'm just curious, what are some of your favorite Grindcore bands? You like Cattle Decapitation, Dying Fetus, Pig Destroyer, etc.?

Well, I probably shouldn't talk about grindcore like I know anything at all, because really I don't. Really the only grindcore band that I listen to all the time is Braindrill. I've never listened to Cattle Decapitation or Pig Destroyer before, so I can't give any word on them. I do like Dying Fetus, but I had no idea they were considered to be grindcore. Damn genres...

Napalm Death!

But really, you should focus on the aesthetic behind the genre: why the people play as fast as they do, why the vocals and the instruments sound the way they do, and the general point behind extreme metal. Virtuosity comes second to aesthetic for almost everyone, and your report should touch on that.

Well to be honest I don't even know what genre Dying Fetus is. I hate genres, I really do. I just listen to whatever sounds good.

Braindrill is good stuff though. Really interesting stuff too lol.

I'm not a death metal fan by any means, but i do know you should show 1 band which is *the* death metal band. I know a bit cause my friend is a huge fan of theirs.

Listen to 7 Churches by Possessed, first Death metal album ever.
Strangely with Larry Lalonde from Primus on guitar.
No joke

You need to growl the whole speech, in keeping with death metal tradition.

I'd base the talk around Morbid Angel. Play them "Fall from Grace" by Morbid Angel. There is a great example of a classically influenced black metal song. They also sing a lot about the culture and religion of satanism, without all the "Kill everyone and burn churches" baloney most of these acts use to shock rebellious kids into buying this stuff for the wrong reason.

There's so many non-metal bands to bring up to.
Like Discharge

i did a presentation on black metal when i was in school. i couldn't actually load my powerpoint, which was most of the presentation since it was half arsed and i hadn't written what to say. so in the end the presentation was me saying "this is my presentation on black metal, here's some darkthrone" and then i played some darkthrone. \m/

you'd need to be talking about both european and american grindcore etc. make sure you mention carcass...cos if you don't **shakes fist**

Don't forget to mention Living Color, the original black metal band.
