That intentional hit last night was classless. Period.
So, I am a big Red Sox fan. Thus, I have always had a bad taste in my mouth for ARod. And all the crap he has gotten himself into lately doesn't add any favor with me.
However, Dempster (Red Sox pitcher) INTENTIONALLY hurled a hard object at the man at least THREE TIMES! He actually missed a couple of times and then finally connected in the ribs. The hit was on a 3-0 pitch. (If you follow baseball that makes it even more intentional and leaves no doubt what was in that pitcher's mind.) I was watching it live and it made my stomach turn. Had Dempster done that ANYWHERE but a baseball diamond he would have been ARRESTED (and rightfully so).
Here's the video.
He should have AT LEAST been ejected from the game. He should be fined. He should be suspended. If it can be proven that a coach told him to do it, the coach should be fined and suspended as well.
And, while we're at it, I have spent quite a few amazing nights and afternoons at Fenway Park, but those fans standing up and cheering during the whole mess was classless as well. It made me think of how things must have been in the Colosseum in ancient Rome with fans cheering while other humans were being eaten by lions.
I never EVER thought I was hear this some out of my mouth (or watch it being typed by my fingers) but I was actually GLAD that ARod hit a homer off the same pitcher AT FENWAY later in the game. (Man, that hurts to say.)
I don't care what ARod did. There is no excuse for a grown man, in a somewhat civilized society, on national TV being viewed by millions, during a competition that is supposed to embody sportsmanship being allowed to use another man as a target while he is trapped in a batter's box and not allowed to defend himself. If you want to fight it out, take it to the parking lot. But just like I think singers should keep their politics off the stage, athletes should keep their personal opinions out of the game. Shut up and play.
I'm still a Sox fan, but I'm pretty pissed about this. :scowl:
Yet another reason why I just cant stand major league sports and the mentality it far too often attracts...
Most fans are absolutely fine, don't get me wrong. I just utterly cannot stand the minority of idiots who get caught up in this as though it's some sort of their own radical religion or something. Morons
* I'm talking about the fans who excuse this crap because it's the "other team", or the fans who attack an opposing team's fan just to "teach them a lesson" etc. That sort of thing.
It's being discussed in the MLB thread, starting here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f34/yo...l#post14749543
Good to know. Doesn't seem like it sparked much interest. Either way, it was stupid.
By getting caught he is jeopardizing everyone's possibility of cheating.
This sort of behavior is why I stick to hockey. Certainly the NHL has had some players acting badly, but it's a given that the sports media, the fans and the other players universally condemn classless play that reflects badly on the game.
Today's professional baseball, basketball and football games have become showcases for bad behavior and the fans don't seem to care. IMO.
