Here's a photo of a Russian Antonov AN-124 (bigger than a C-5A) on approach to NAS North Island in San Diego. I took this from a fishing boat on a field trip with some 4th graders. Those big hot dogs are barriers to keep you from getting too close to the nuclear submarines on Point Loma.

I've never seen a barrier like that.

edit: Isn't that the Russians' "Shuttle" transport?
edit #2: Never mind, that's the AN-225

HUGE planes, very impressive to see one up close. Quote:

Like the AN-124, very impressive... but it was surprisingly low-tech.

They are not hi-tech machines and aren't meant to nor need to be. They're for oversized cargo and able to operate from rough runways. The interior has a crane that runs the length of the ceiling inside. It's Russia's version of the C-5 Galaxy.

One landed at our airport one night while we were working. The door opened and a few dozen Russian military spilledout and surrounded it and we were instructed to keep our distance. But we could still get close enough to look. It's unbelievable how massive those things are.

They had to build a track to drive the train on board and IIRC, the cargo-weight tolerance of the plane was just met.
Cool planes!

| | | These planes are massive. I remember seeing one (not sure of the exact model, of course) at an aviation festival when I was younger. I'm still impressed by the memory. Quote:

I wish I would've taken a picture, but when I was driving through Alamogordo, NM I remember seeing an odd fighter plane that I believe was a Mig-23 painted black (with some other markings).
