Here's a photo of a Russian Antonov AN-124 (bigger than a C-5A) on approach to NAS North Island in San Diego. I took this from a fishing boat on a field trip with some 4th graders. Those big hot dogs are barriers to keep you from getting too close to the nuclear submarines on Point Loma.

That is AWESOME.

I've never seen a barrier like that.

It almost looks like it's bouncing on a giant trampoline in the middle of the ocean. Good shot!

edit: Isn't that the Russians' "Shuttle" transport?
edit #2: Never mind, that's the AN-225

I have seen one of those at the airbase near my Dad's house.
HUGE planes, very impressive to see one up close.

I have also seen one of the Russian shuttles. They brought one out here years back for an exhibition.
Like the AN-124, very impressive... but it was surprisingly low-tech.

The plane in the picture is an AN-124. The AN-225 has six engines and twin rudders. The picture looks like it has 3 engines on it's wing but it doesn't.

They are not hi-tech machines and aren't meant to nor need to be. They're for oversized cargo and able to operate from rough runways. The interior has a crane that runs the length of the ceiling inside. It's Russia's version of the C-5 Galaxy.

These planes are enormous. When I was in college I worked for a while for US Air Cargo. One landed at our airport one night while we were working. The door opened and a few dozen Russian military spilledout and surrounded it and we were instructed to keep our distance. But we could still get close enough to look. It's unbelievable how massive those things are.

Not sure if it was an Antanov or another "brand" but I read a trade magazine years back on how they transported pre-built locomotives from Ontario, Canada to Dublin, Ireland in these planes.

They had to build a track to drive the train on board and IIRC, the cargo-weight tolerance of the plane was just met.

Cool planes!

Thanks for the correction. I thought it was an AN-124. Bigger than a C-5A.

More tires than a mile of I-495 at rush hour too.

These planes are massive. I remember seeing one (not sure of the exact model, of course) at an aviation festival when I was younger. I'm still impressed by the memory.

Beef, pork, spices, and salt.

Just wait till you see the mustard squirt out of the plane.

I believe I've also seen those barriers in place at NAS North Island in the area that surrounds the aircraft carriers.

I wish I would've taken a picture, but when I was driving through Alamogordo, NM I remember seeing an odd fighter plane that I believe was a Mig-23 painted black (with some other markings).
