It is a very weak carcinogen. Don't get unnecessary X-Rays, CT-scans, etc. Isn't it common sense? Don't move to Denver, either, your radiation dose will go way up living in those U rich mountains at elevation. Better press the panic button.

Health workers frequently using the said machines will carry a radiation meter on them, which warns the wearer when it gets past a certain level of exposure. Which is a perfectly tolerable level, and is much higher than what the average American is exposed to.

X-rays ect. account for somewhere between 50-500 on average (mainly depending on where it is), however I think a thyroid scan is one of the biggest ones with something like 7800 units of raditaion exposed to.
There is a calculator for it somewhere, you fill out your elevation, how many hours you spend in an aeroplane, how many X-rays you have of what types per year on average, and what foods you eat. It tells you if you are over the threshold, not sure how accurate it is though.
X-rays are not all that bad, just don't go getting thousands of the things. The less the better (within reason).

Anyways, yes, its a bunch of sensationalist c**p, society. Perhaps its a bit, "tin-foil hat-ish" of me, but I think it all boils down to governmental control of the populace...a timid/scared population is easier to control.
