I was amused to notice that the abbreviation that used to mean India Pale Ale is now being used to refer to Indiana Pale Ale by some American brewers.
That said, some of the beers you're getting over there in the USA these days are first rate brews. Some Europeans have been slow to realise this, but the days when "American beer" was a synonym for "watery rubbish" are long gone.
I've enjoyed some great American beers on my last couple of visits. Dale's Pale Ale is one of my favourites.

I just finished one from a quasi-local brewery, and I always feel like I thoroughly enjoy my IPAs more than other beers.
I completely agree with you on the "American beer" mythos, though. Fantastic beers. |

The best beer in the world is served here. All beer lovers should make the pilgrimage to this place. But be warned - they will serve you a maximum of three.

Let me 'splain.
They are light in body so they quench thirst without being filling.
They are highly hopped so they have that unique flavor hopheads enjoy.
The American style IPA's are additionally dry hopped with the varieties from the Cascade region which gives the beer a citrusy flavor.
They use a large amount of crystal or caramel malts for sweetness to balance the high bitterness of the hops.
They are high in alcohol, typically 6-7% ABV
What's not to love?

My personal fav is O'Dell's IPA. IMHO, the Cascade hop aroma and taste don't get any better and balanced than that! |

Every August there is one special brew day that is more special than any other special brew day, and that's the day that I brew with the fresh (undried, unfrozen) hops that I just picked.
This year I will be brewing an American IPA and an Imperial Raspberry stout. Both batches will be brewed exclusively with the fresh Cascade hops.
Oh, Yeah.

Cascade hops are great, but then I love hops...They CAN give that fruity finish without being sweet.
Unfortunately, my girlfriend is VERY opposed to hops. We usually find a nice wheat beer for her.

I prefer doppelbocks and trappist ales

Founders Brewery here in town make excellent examples of both IPA's and stouts..
