Over the past 24 hours I have been looking at the new iphone 3GS that comes out in about a week. But the only major differences between the 3G that I have and the new 3GS aren't as numerous as I had hoped. Mainly the hardware is faster, 3mp camera, and a video camera. The new update for the iphone will bring all the bells and whistles.
So with that being said, should I even bother getting the new iphone or not?

Maybe the voice command will also be available on 3.0 OS for the 3G, I don't know. The processing speed alone makes me wish I were getting one. Only drawback is that according to AT&T you have to pay $700 for the 32GB model if you're not due for an upgrade. At least that's what someone passed along to me via email:
" For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T
customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new
two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB). Visit www.wireless.att.com for eligibility information."

Not to mention, you'd have to pay FULL PRICE.

bc | I suppose... but you're not unlocking 3G net access. So the only thing you're buying is a faster processor and more memory... not worth $600, IMO. Quote:

I'm very let down by the way AT&T is handling this whole thing... no rush to give us features we want like tethering, even though Apple has made it work. And the MMS feature... yes, I understand that there will be a significant increase on AT&T's infrastructure, but it doesn't seem like they're in a rush to make things perfect.

Of course, I don't have an old iPhone to upgrade from. I am still rocking the RAZR. |

Only three cities are covered by their service. Most of the state's AT&T service is considered "partnered." http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/ |

I agree it's not worth paying $600! However it IS akin to going from edge to 3G as the download speeds will be 2x faster than current 3G. From what I understand it's a new 3G hardware tehnology that increases download bandwidth to 7mbps.

| | | | I still have an original 2G. Hopefully my battery lasts long enough to where I can wait until next year's update, I'm unimpressed by the hardware features.

b | Yes, it's going to be much faster... no dispute there... just not worth $600 to go that much faster. These phones are incredible machines, but I can't afford to update every generation/year. This is my computer year, next year I replace the cell phone.
I can't afford to have the two land on the same year
