Finally I can get rid of this stupid Samsung Omnia. Past few months it has been slowly but steadily dying on me. Luckily I can extend my contract January 3rd. So what is it going to be the iPhone4 or an Android phone. Played with the iPhone and several android phones already but I don't see the big difference. Any recommendations/experiences?
Also, does anyone have a clue about the new Nexus that's been rumoured about? The last update I can find on the internet dates back to late october. |

I give a slight lean to Android devices because of the ability to modify and expand them. I am an IT professional, so it is my nature to tweak and modify anything with an OS on it.
Now if you just want something to turn on and go, then I would recommend the iPhone. With very little tweaking, you have a device that will work just fine every time you turn it on. To my knowledge, you can not expand or upgrade an iPhone. You sure can't with this iPad. There is not as much to tweak on the iPhone OS.
I am speaking of devices that have not been "rooted" or "jailbroke".

I avoided the iPhone because places I work, AT&T (currently, the only U.S. provider for the iPhone) has poor reception.
I think it really comes down to personal preference though. |

Ive had an iphone since the beginning (I've still got my original 4gb iphone) so maybe i'm a little bias but to me my iphone is better hands down. It's the only apple product i own I'm no means a fanboy
(i don't even own an ipod).I'm not sure if it's the phone or the OS but her battery life SUCKS she has to charge it everyday and she doesn't use it much.

I like the Android OS more than iOS but it's not a massive difference just my personal preference.

I'm like Mike, with a burning desire to tweak anything and everything tweakable. I plan on switching to a Droid at some point in the very near future.

Still leaves the question, for a non IT guy, what can't I do on an iPhone that I can on a droid phone. Without jailbreaking that is. Mech. Engineer student btw, so I know something about computers. |

I got two batteries and a charger on eBay for $10.00. They work great. |

It looks like the iPad and iPhone are the same thing, with the iPad being bigger and not being able to make telephone calls.
On my stock Droid, I can change the system font, the application icons, how many desktops I can scroll through, I can add "widgets", I can access the file system to move files back and forth from my Droid to my PC as if the Droid was another drive on the PC. I can change the picture when my Droid boots up to whatever I want. I can make the Droid say whatever I want across the top instead of Verizon Wireless. I can change the color of the LED flashing light when a text, phone call, or VM comes in. I can replace the battery with no hassles.
Someone more versed in the iPhone OS can perhaps verify if the above can also be done on the iPhone. I have not figured out how to do them on this iPad.
Once you "root" (Android equivalent of jailbreak, but with more options) an Android, then you can create your own smartphone OS and make it look and act however you want. Granted, doing these things requires a certain amount of technical skills and abilities. It isn't for everyone, which is why I suggest the iPhone for those who just want it to work.

Re: Nexus S
Sascha Segan, a very straightforward tech geek who has been reviewing cell phones for a very long time, says that the Nexus S is good but not the best Android phone. http://bit.ly/gBcKYe
I believe he is partial to the Galaxy S line.

Last Sunday, however, my Blackberry died, and I decided to go with a Droid X instead of another Blackberry. After spending 5 days with the Droid, I no longer have any interest whatsoever in an iPhone. It is quite an amazing device, and I'm VERY pleased with it.
That said, if you have good service coverage in your area, the iPhone will probably make you happy.

I'm hoping that iPhones get up to at least 80GB sometime soon. the NAND cards that the iPhone and iPod Touch use, run it multiples of 4 and I believe Toshiba just released a 64GB card. So 128GB should be right around the corner
