iphone Activations Not Going So Well 7-11

Sign in to disble this ad
I had hopes of casually strolling into my local ATT store around Sunday evening after the crowds left and picking up a 16G iphone, but it seems the activation process/servers have crashed from New York to California and the itunes servers have multiple outages as well. There are reports of Apple stores sending customers home to activate the phones in itunes without the store activtions.

Has anyone had luck getting one to work yet?

THAT explains it. I got the 'update available' for iTunes' message, but could not connect with the server. Sounds like it's best to wait a day until things settle down.

From what I understood from the article I read (that could have been ill-informed) there was also a software problem in addition to the strained servers.

Gizmodo's been updating all day. Pretty entertaining considering I'm at work and my brother got to the AT&T store at like 3:30 this morning. He has a phone but no service and my friend has a $250 piece of paper.

I think the whole story will evolve throughout the day.

In the UK the main carrier (o2) makes you activate your iPhone using IE.

which you cant get on macs.

Someone had a brain fart.

(also who the hell does that anyway? IE only...***.)

No You can get IE5. I know because I have it. But it won't work with IE that old. MS dropped that version years ago.

Excerpt from Networkworld http://www.networkworld.com/communit...ry=ts_iphone3g

Adventures in iPhone hunting
Jonathan's tale: Strike One. Even with a bad back, our brave iPhone hunter went to an AT&T store in Cambridge, Mass., at 6:45 a.m., and was #25 in line. The store had received only 10 8GB models (there were no 16GB models, but supposedly those were coming in). After standing in line for about 30 minutes, he was approached by an AT&T staffer, who said that he could pay for one now and receive it in about seven to 10 days. Jonathan left the store without an iPhone.

Keith's tale: Strike two. With two kids, it was tougher for Keith to wake up early, so he didn't end up at the Millbury, Mass., AT&T store until 8:45 a.m., to see a line of people already outside the store. The store had quickly sold out of its 10 8GB models, but another 20 16GB models were due to arrive via the Fed Ex truck later that morning. Other "word on the street" reports came in that Fed Ex had messed up the entire New England iPhone shipments, and Apple had to ration whatever devices that made it through.

Kevin's tale: A hit! Kevin goes to the Manchester, Conn., store and arrives at 5:50 a.m. and is #20 in line. He grabs the last black 16GB version, infuriating a lot of people who are behind him. He doesn't get into the store until 8:45 a.m., and then it takes a long time for the phone to get activated. He arrives at the office at about 10:45 a.m., and then tries to synch the iPhone with iTunes (so he can transfer his music over to the new device), and discovers that the iTunes Store has crashed. But at least he has the device.

I'm gonna hit my local AT&T store after work and see if things have smoothed any. If they have, I'll probably pick up a white one. I'm keeping up-to-date with my RSS feeds as well to see if anything happens.
