This is an interesting read:

I think it's a bit weird how the rush to stay in front with technology forces companies to put stuff on sale that obviously isn't really ready to work in the reliable way that purchasers should expect. We've all been caught out by this, I think. But Apple seems to be stuck in this rut particularly badly at the moment.

Fortunately for Apple they have legions of fans who will continue to but theirs products just because they're Apple.

This will what will save them for now. In six months most Apple fans will forget about these problems.

I think that these issues will drive some away, especially since the smart phone market is expanding extremely fast and the number of options is increasing dramatically.

But Apple is the one brand that enjoys such hardcore fans that they can put out a product that has been fundamentally flawed since it's inception. i.e. a "phone" that's biggest short coming has always been making phone calls. Some of this can be attributed to AT&T, but with more recent developments, it bring into question, "has the iphone's design been partially responsible all along?"

Regardless, Apple will still have fans that will stand up for them and defend the product and buy it even though it has a design flaw.

Now that is marketing genius. That is the kind of blind devotion that any company would love.

As far a keeping up with technology goes, all companies are going to have their work cut out for them.

Apple products never have flaws.

This is the phone you're looking for.

Move along.

Neither my wife nor myself have had any reception problems. We've had nothing but great utility and user experience with ours so we will coninue to happily use our phones (which are among the highest rated phones by all major tech magazines and bloggers as well as consumer reports). Sorry to disappoint, jwbassman. Just like all iPhone users are not ignorant fanboys I guess not all iphones have reception issues. I guess you'll have to stop stereotyping now. Meh, who am I kiddin'. Some people just get so much satisfaction from stereotyping that they just don't want to consider reality.

Both my fiance and I have iPhones and are due to change them over (particuarly as my partner's iPhone is a 3G and the battery is dying), but practically we wont do it until the antenna issue gets resolved (or at least Apple comments further). The existing phones 3G and 3GS have been working fine so there is no reason to upgrade. We also don't have the reception issues here in the UK like you do with AT&T so thats not an issue. I don't want to "early adopt" a new phone that looks like it may be a bit half baked. It seems like this also happened with the 27" iMacs (which I was going to buy but the screen issues made me hold off for the next gen).

Apple is going to comment further in a press conference today.

Yes, depending on what they say will determine whether we go for iPhone 4 now or wait until the next generation. This has clearly been handled poorly by Apple, but they may be able to save some face. I read reports that have suggested that a recall is off the cards but perhaps there may be a software fix or free "bumpers" shipped with iPhones. It not really an issue as I would use a case anyway, but I don't like beta testing underdeveloped products.

In front with technology? Apple is almost always behind

For the record, I am not Apple-bashing, i just was riffing on a catch-phrase...BUT, with the fiasco with the early leak Gizmodo nonsense and all that hype unraveling, there obviously had to be a rush to market to gain on the hype machine.

It's just unfortunate that no matter how diligent you think you are before releasing a product, there's always gonna be bugs. It's just that much more alarming when it's such an iconic brand. And much moreso when it's over something so relatively routine.

But you're always gonna have the people in on this for the yuks. Do I find this affair humorous? Sure. No big deal tho, it'll be fixed...and if it's NOT, and Apple refuses a recall, then most definitely class-action that ****.

22 minutes into the press conference, still no fix, but an admittance that Jobs KNEW if you held it wrong there would be a problem. And an attitude if you don't want one, don't buy it. My, that is put-offish.

true, with computers mainly, but never so frustratingly (IMO) as with Apple. Especially when it involves doubling memory capacity for the same coin on non-user-upgradable (at least w/o big headaches) devices.

I had no problem with your post or Bill's. I really couldn't care less if someone doesn't like Apple. I have problems with a lot of their practices myself and a lot of "eye-rollers" come out of Jobs' mouth. ("its magical!"). I prefer Windows machines when it comes to standard computing and laptops.

What I object to though is ignorant stereotyping and insinuations based solely on what phone someone chose to buy. Thats all.
