So I'm in the market of getting a iPod Touch. Then I got the idea. Why not get an iPhone and it will have a camera as well and takes video.
Mind you I do not have or plan on having actual phone service to it for a while, if ever at the prices I've heard of for it.
So....
Is this reasonable idea to get the iPhone instead because it has the ability to take pics and video? Also...does the iPhone have Wi-Fi like the Touch? Will the iPhone work without actual phone service? |

the amount you wind up paying for iPhone service is, IMHO, absurd. plus you get more space for music on the Touch. Or, at least I think it does...I haven't checked in quite some time.

If this changed with the last gen ones, please do correct me.

If this changed with the last gen ones, please do correct me. | The 2nd gen touch has a speaker. I listen to mine at my desk sans headphones because I don't want to carry them around.
From the rumors I've heard, the 3rd gen touch is supposed to start carrying the features of the iPhone such as the camera, etc, so I would just wait.

What I learned is that you do have to have a sim card, similar to an SD card but smaller, to operate the iphone. In order to use the device you have to load the OS thru iTunes and iTunes wont let you do anything until you have a sim card.
I *think* you can just use any old sim card and will be enough to get the device working. My idea is to just buy a sim card off CL and pop it in. I've seen them for as little as $15. They also have them shipped from china for $5 off ebay. However, I am not positive iTunes will accept a sim card without any dollar value or current 'plan' attached to it.
Does somebody know?
The other thing is that it is not too expensive to get a cheap plan. My idea is to get a super cheap plan for those rare times when I do need a cell phone, such as in an emergency or trying to find an address etc. Its getting harder and harder to find a payphone these days... making a cell phone *almost* a necessity.
The cheapest plan I have heard of, with a little research, is actually thru 7/11. Theirs is called 'Speak Out' and it gives you .25 per minute for $25 worth of minutes ($25 for 100 min) or .20 a minute if you buy $75 worth of minutes. You do have to buy their phone though. So it works out to $59cdn for the phone (and they give you 20 free minutes) + $25 for the minutes. So for around $85 you are up and running. The good thing about the Speak Out plan is that you have 365 days to use your minutes and can roll them over whenever you want. They also give you free voicemail and free caller ID. Seems like a good deal to me. My wife had a cell and it cost her .40 a minute and the plan was much worse. I think her's was "Solo".
Still havent decided if I am just going to chance buying a used SIM off CL or just buy a Speak Out plan. Seems kinda silly to buy another phone to get the one you have working, but then again I guess you would have a backup.
If an older used SIM card would work I'd probably try that first.

Otherwise I don't want to carry around my bulky Canon while I work on the road. |

A lot of times I simply pull off the road to take a break...sometimes for an hour or two. I get SOOOOOO bored with nothing to do. This should cure that! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
