Yes. It will delete his songs. Before you even install iTunes on your computer, plug in the iPod and the computer should recognise it as a mass storage device, "explore" it, and pull the music folder off the player and onto your desktop.

Then install iTunes, and then locate the "music" folder within the iTunes software section, and add the music folder's (on your desktop) contents to the iTunes music folder. Then authorize your computer to playback the music, if it is aac protected, because if it is, it will tell you your computer isn't authorized.

That said, now you have to update from your computer everytime you wanna add music...or you have to repeat this lengthy process if you wanna use it back on your buddy's computer.

And now that you have all your tunes and his tunes on your computer, setup a master playlist for his iPod and one for yours if you get one, and make that computer a master-hub of sorts. What do you play your music on now? Windows Media Player?

this entire process is explained more thoroughly in the iTunes FAQ's

From my experience, the easiest way to do it is for him to plug it in at home and set his setting to manual sync, and then when he plugs it into your computer, it won't delete his music. You'll just have to manually sync whatever you want to put on it.

I've done this with my friend before, so I know it works. Just make sure he enables manual sync/disables auto sync (I can't remember what the option is listed as).

I'll have to try that, I was unaware that was an option.

It's a little easier than your method, certainly.

Oh geez, looking back at the original post, I thought the scenario was something like his computer was messed up or something, and didn't wanna lose his tunes....sorry, talk about your lack of reading comprehension...that was what I was going on about....hahahaha...

but I still didn't know about that other option...oh, what you must think of me...

Just tell your friend to bring his computer with him when he comes over.

Uh, just say "no" when the pop-up asks you to synchronize the iPod.

an iPod, as far as I know, is a mirror of whatever iTunes library it is synced to - be it your or his. I've never heard of plugging an iPod in to a new computer and the music getting erased on the computer
