Is it possible, with an Apple iPod, to put my own MP3's onto it, or am I limited to tunes that I buy from Apple?

Yes. I put my own mp3s onto mine all the time. I use iTunes to manage the library.

It's actually really easy to add the .mp3. Select File, Add File to Library. You can add other file types too.

If you have LAME or some other free MP3 encoder, they will transfer just like any other MP3...

You can use iTunes. It's a free download from Apple. Works on Windows or Mac.

If you don't like iTunes, there is a program called EphPod that works great, and is free.
