Is the iPod touch worth the money?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, i just saw 3rd Generation iPods for 170 bucks at walmart.
I never really wanted one until i saw my friends using them (that's not te reason).
After looking at how you can use the internet wherever there is a wireless network, some handy apps and the other features in general, i am thinking about getting one.

The thing is, i dont really know if it is worth the 200 bucks i could be spending on bass gear or other stuf..

they have refurb i touches on Woot today, 150 bucks. They are kinda not worth it as a storage device, but as an entertainment device, they ace.

I'm enjoying the heck out of mine (I got the 64GB version), but only you can decide if it's worth it. In addition to navigation through your music being easier, the avaialble apps are a blast. The iPod Touch is basically an iPhone without the phone and camera features, and can run most of the iPhone apps. As for wireless capabilities, yes, you can connect to the intarwebz where ever there is an AVAILABLE wireless network. Most places I go have protected networks, so that feature is limited for me.

Yeah, i know some networks are protected, but it is still a cool feature i really like.

I've got one and I'm deeply in like with it. Note I'm an older guy (40's). It's my first MP3 player, and I like that feature just fine. Sound quality and easy of navigation are just fine. I like the apps (stuff like FaceBook, Weather Channel), the ability the log in and do my causual browsing over my company's "guest" network, intended for visitors who themselves are expected to do some casual browsing. Nice to have in inconvient places around the house or at work when I need to quickly look something up and my computer is not handy/would need to be booted. There are some cool guitar oriented apps, too, although I've not taken the plunge and bought/used them (i.e., this is based one what I've heard). Being able to watch a movie while traveling will be quite nice (I've had and will likely have some more overseas flights, and from experience I know I cannot rely on having in flight entertaintment).

For me personally a downside is the battery life. It's good enough now that I've gotten used to it, but the stuff I find the MOST fun (game apps) chews battery life pretty fast. However, now that the newness has worn off of my toy and I use it at a more sane pace, it's not a problem for me. I also at first had a problem in which some of my songs wouldn't play (they'd just queue up and then skip to the next one). Turns out it was because when I first synched it to my computer that computer was NOT connected to the internet to REGISTER the iPod, thus it was not allowing some music to be played on an unregistered device. After wiping it and starting from scratch (easy for me -- not THAT many songs) it has worked fine.

I really loved mine the first year, now I just use it just for music, I don't even bother with apps. I wish I had the 32 GB version, I constantly have to swap out music because I ran out of space =(

I love mine, but I still use a normal iPod for my music as the iTouch doesn't have a lot of disc space.

I love my 32...I have to switch out albums cause I have like 80g on my computer, but its great for keeping my band playlists in order...genius is great for mixing things up...the apps are cool but I deleted most of mine to make room for more music...and once I watch an entire series in the bathroom at work over the course of a week.

If I were you I would save more money until the ipad arrives.
But if you can't wait that long I would buy the touch, it's a great piece of machinery

The world is full of iTards already. There are plenty of better music and all around players around. Really all Apple has is the app store. Example A
ExampleB

"Okay, we'll take our great-selling new device that lets you have an Apple device that can surf the web and fit in your pocket, and then we'll make another that's exactly the same, only it costs more and will be too big to fit in your pocket!"

I get your point. Never thought about it in that way

It would still be a good device to use at home

Still cool, don't get me wrong. I'm just a little jaded because I was looking forward to it being a fully-functional tablet PC.

I love the iPod Touch, and I think it's much more worth buying than the iPad. The iPod Touch is much more portable and that's really something that makes the device so great.

For that sort of money, you could buy something that will still perform a useful function in 18 months time. Like a really good power drill, ten sets of pyjamas or a decent sized bookcase. I'd pass.
