| | | | Is the iPod touch worth the money?

Hey guys, i just saw 3rd Generation iPods for 170 bucks at walmart.
I never really wanted one until i saw my friends using them (that's not te reason).
After looking at how you can use the internet wherever there is a wireless network, some handy apps and the other features in general, i am thinking about getting one.
The thing is, i dont really know if it is worth the 200 bucks i could be spending on bass gear or other stuf..

In addition to navigation through your music being easier, the avaialble apps are a blast. The iPod Touch is basically an iPhone without the phone and camera features, and can run most of the iPhone apps. As for wireless capabilities, yes, you can connect to the intarwebz where ever there is an AVAILABLE wireless network. Most places I go have protected networks, so that feature is limited for me. |

| | | | Yeah, i know some networks are protected, but it is still a cool feature i really like.

Sound quality and easy of navigation are just fine. I like the apps (stuff like FaceBook, Weather Channel), the ability the log in and do my causual browsing over my company's "guest" network, intended for visitors who themselves are expected to do some casual browsing. Nice to have in inconvient places around the house or at work when I need to quickly look something up and my computer is not handy/would need to be booted. There are some cool guitar oriented apps, too, although I've not taken the plunge and bought/used them (i.e., this is based one what I've heard). Being able to watch a movie while traveling will be quite nice (I've had and will likely have some more overseas flights, and from experience I know I cannot rely on having in flight entertaintment).
For me personally a downside is the battery life. It's good enough now that I've gotten used to it, but the stuff I find the MOST fun (game apps) chews battery life pretty fast. However, now that the newness has worn off of my toy and I use it at a more sane pace, it's not a problem for me. I also at first had a problem in which some of my songs wouldn't play (they'd just queue up and then skip to the next one). Turns out it was because when I first synched it to my computer that computer was NOT connected to the internet to REGISTER the iPod, thus it was not allowing some music to be played on an unregistered device. After wiping it and starting from scratch (easy for me -- not THAT many songs) it has worked fine.

But if you can't wait that long I would buy the touch, it's a great piece of machinery

Like a really good power drill, ten sets of pyjamas or a decent sized bookcase. I'd pass.
