Irritating internet problem.

So I have a very strange problem, in any browser but only on my computer. All websites load fine...except a select few. Gmail seems to never load, and facebook is very slow. Also when I search something in google when I click on a link it always goes to something random, nothing even close to what the link says. This only happens on my computer, in any browser, doesn't matter.

I've reset every possible setting for the internet, network connections, etc. This is driving me nuts as I need my email for some college stuff and can't always use another computer. I'm thinking that I'll reformat the damn thing cause no-one can figure this out. Any of you have any clue what's going down?

My recommendation would be to try a different browser and see what happens. I'm guessing you use IE....Firefox is excellent, and Safari is growing in popularity. You can always upload your bookmarks into a new browser.

You may be dealing with a browser hijacker, a malicious piece of software that somehow has infected your computer.

I've tried: IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari. Same result in each.

Ya, that could be possible, I've had this computer for 3 years, so I wouldn't doubt that a virus could be the cause, but windows can't find anything and Mcaffee is just horrid to deal with. I've backed up all my data, you think reformating would be wise? a fresh install of windows xp would be pretty nice.

How long has this problem been going on? I've had similar experiences (some pages load slowly or not at all, while others are fine) when there's a problem with my Internet provider's DNS servers.

Have you tried inputting the OpenDNS server addresses(208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) into your internet configuration? It might help. Couldn't hurt.

One thing you could try is deleting all your temp files. Believe it or not, disk cleanup does not actually get rid of all of these files.

for 2000/xp the temp folder should be in
c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp

for vista i think it is
c:\users\username\local settings\temp
though i'm not sure on that, i haven't used vista in awhile.

When you delete these files, use shift+del. that skips the recycling bin and permanently deletes them.
