The Italian Job - How Would YOU Rescue The Gold?

In a few weeks time when school resumes here in the UK, I will be setting a mini-project for my budding physics students around the topic of turning forces/moments/centre of mass.

I'll show them the closing scene, with Michael Caine saying "hang on lads, I've got an idea...", and then its over to them to come up with a sensible, credible, viable plan that would work... but ALL the gold must be rescued, and no-one dies. The fate of the bus doesn't matter.

So, knowing that TB is the font of ALL knowledge, I thought I'd see what ideas you guys might have...

Ok...give me two ideas...one with the tank at the front, the other at the back.

First, though, calculate how much that gold weighs. Enough to flatten an 18 wheeler!

Of course a little bit of belief must be suspended....like the likelihood of that precarious balance being achieved in the first place! But you raise a good point :)

I wondered why they used "gold" for the stuff-to-be-stolen. Why not diamonds (or other expensive jewels)? Lightweight enough to put in a Mini Cooper.

How would I rescue the gold? Rewrite the scipt....

Not the most inventive...but hey...

The "intricate calculation" at 1:21 is a bit of a joke, though. :D
