Here's hoping Libya can cope with the fall of a long-time (albeit dictatorial) regime.

Way I see it, this is the perfect chance for "the West" to set up/encourage/support a Western style democracy in Libya, and gain a new, oil rich, ally.

Slightly premature I think, it's not over until Gadaafi himself is captured, and captured rather than summarily executed so that the 'rebel' forces can avoid making him a martyr to disaffected middle eastern groups, and to demonstrate that they can rise above Gadaafi's own standard and keep the moral high ground.

Then there is the question of quelling further unrest from any brainwashed groups of GadaafI supporters so that Libya can assume a valid democratic place in the world.

So far, the signs from other rebel held towns seem encouraging, but it ain't over until it's over...to think otherwise would be to suggest the Iraq situation was over when they pulled down Saddam's statue

Ez now, poppy. I repeated what the rebels and "liberated" civilians of Tripoli chanted. Read the linked article. I do not condone refering to anyone by a physical characteristic. Additionally, I am refraining from stating an opinion on this event. It is my hope that the loss of civilian life is significantly less than the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan by the United States and its allies. My apology if it appeared to you that I support rascist statements- I do not.

It does look like Gaddafi is on his last legs in Libya. On the other hand, the Taliban fell from power pretty fast in Afghanistan, and look how that's working out now. Each country is different. We'll have to wait and see if Libya turns into another failed state or is able to hold together and get a decent government in place.

Is Libya a primarily Muslim state? Is there a possibility of fundamentalists taking power to create a theocracy a la Iran?

My concern would be another Iraq/Afghanistan type of long term commitment.

...From this post and the few others that you have, I'm seeing some reading comprehension issues.

Yeah this is just the first step down a long road. Lots of opportunity for this to go south during the reconfiguration. But I'm stoked for the people of Libya just the same.

You're the biggest dreamer since Paul Wolfowitz.

Uh, I think the actual end result will be quite the opposite.
