I've given up my status!

My status as unemployed has finally come to an end! It's now early October and I haven't worked since mid-March (though I was kept on the payroll until mid-June - thank god I got a decent severance package, right?)

Anyway, I don't start until 10/19, but it's a long-time-a-comin'! The downside is I might have to start traveling again. I spent the better part of the last 4 years on the road and used to love it. I now find getting on a plane every Sunday night or Monday morning and coming home on Thursday night or Friday afternoon too hard to get anything done and have any kind of balance. But, in the absence of anything else, back to consulting I go.

I did manage to get a big promotion and a massive raise to go with it, though. Too bad I'm buried in bills for the next year or two, or I'd go on a bass-replacing spree. I had to sell 3 of my 5 basses to fund this long stretch of unemployment.

Sorry to hear that!

If it makes you feel any better, I heard a recent statistic comparing the unemployment rate from September, '09 to December, '07. In December, '07 there were approximately 1.7 applicants for every job opening, whereas last month the number was approximately 7 applicants for every job opening.

These sure are rough times!

Congratulations, RAM. Hope things turn around for you, Jimmy Bones.

I've been unemployed myself since the end of April, but I'm a college student, so it's not vital for me to be employed right now. I'm just flat broke.

I've never been unemployed since I started working and I'm only 17.

I dunno what I would do without a job.
I commend you guys for not going insane

Employed for a little over a year at my current job. Before that, 9 months of hearing "sorry, that position is already filled."

On the up side, I now know how to live on $40 a month! A skill that I hope I will NEVER have to use again...

What do you do for work? I travel a lot also. It's still new and fun for me, but I can see it getting old real quick.

I'm a software consultant, designing business systems for large companies. If you're still with me, I'm an SAP consultant.

Travel used to be pretty cool, but that was back when I had a wife and child to come home to. Now I have neither to come home to, and it makes dating difficult. I've been told by a few women they want a man who's around.

I have been out of work for 6 months and counting. Not by choice. It sucks, and I want a job.
