jailbreaking iphones..anyone done it?

I recently got an iPhone 3gs and it took me forever and fits of anger and buckets of tears from frustration to finally figure out how to get the ringtones and apps on the phone.
But I hate the fact that I have to be "told" how to use my phone, like I HAVE to use iTunes blah blah.
Anyways, I'd like to do some more personalizing to it-like a picture behind the application icons. But I see the only way is to "jailbreak" the phone. I have been scouring the internet researching and found different sites and stuff but I am sort of scared to. Will I lose my photos, apps, contacts and ringtones if I do this? I want to but nervous.
Anyone ever jailbroken their iphone??

Jailbreaking is easy, you might have to rest everything though. I would wait for the software update at the end of June and see if that offers you what you are looking for.
