Today marks the 47th anniversary of the day that JFK was assassinated in Dallas. Are any of you (besides myself) old enough to remember where you were when you got the news? I was in a wood shop class in 7th grade.

Then she told me. I forget if they had officially announced his death yet, but I seem to remember Walter Cronkite choking up a little when he did finally announce it, but that could be just from seeing that bit replayed back a million times since. I can't really remember how I felt about it, I think it was more like I was confused, as in "Why would anyone do that?"

But what I really recall even more vividly was when Oswald was shot, how shocked my mother and later my father were to see that it was Jack Ruby, they had met Ruby several years earlier. |

When we came back from lunch Mrs Bartell had her head on her desk and had been crying and told os the President had been shot. Mr Rhyles, the principal, came in and told us school was closed and to go home. Watched the sad news on TV with mom. Some things you just don't forget.
For three days that was all that was on TV. The funeral, the procession, the capture, Oswald's death. Dark days. |
