job hunting

Sign in to disble this ad
so im currently job hunting because i havent had a job in a while and ive mustve applied at like 20 different places by now. I've been applying since i lost my last job. it's ridiculous. a couple places i called back to see if they've reviewed my application and they're like oh sorry we're not hiring anymore right now due to pay roll demands. that's a little rough when you cant afford to hire someone and youre a major company.

anyone else having similar problems?

also, if anyone lives in the Harrisonburg, VA area let me know if you know a place that is hiring of if you have a job for me. thanks

It's the same here in Fredericksburg. I've been looking since June, and nothing has cropped up at all. Listening in on the talk in some shops, it seems like things haven;t been this bad since the 70's.

BTW, how've you been, man?

It's been pretty bad most places right now. Keep plugging away, because jobs certainly aren't going to find you.

Keep trying, man. I was out of work for more than three months and I spent about 25 hours a week trying to find a job and another 25 hours a week mowing lawns and painting and cleaning houses for just enough cash to put food on the table and gas in the car.

Looking for work when no one is hiring sucks, but eventually you'll get something decent as long as you keep a good attitude.

Good luck!

You're thinking of Frederick, Maryland. I don't much about it, aside from that some old people came to FrederickSBURG, Virginia, looking for FREDERICK, Maryland, and asked me for directions.

The job market is rough right now, part time work around here is hard to find as well.

I think it's more fear of a declining economy than current conditions. Needless to say, I'm in debt, surviving on my credit cards alone being in college with no income nor job.

Needless to say, I'm searching too.

Dude, I've been looking for work for 6 weeks, and I've only gotten three calls. I picked the wrong time to stop playing for a living a look for a real job. I've got a strong resumé, and I STILL can't get an interview. It's tough man, and I'm going broke.

I've been in the recruitment business for the last 20 years! My best advice to you is to utilize your network of contacts... call everyone you know, and let them know your lookin for work.
Also, as you are seeking work in a highly competitive market, your resume MUST stand out from your competition. How do I do this?
Ok, this is what I suggest and bare with me as it will make sense eventually!
Regardless of what job you perform, your job is to make your boss look good! If your work efforts result in your boss looking good, you will also be seen as being the type of employee who "we keep" during hard economic times.
So, you make your boss look good by accomplishing all of the tasks assigned to you on time, within budget etc...
So, and here's the tricky part... spend some time to list out your accomplishments, in your previous experience/jobs.
Accomplishments are defined in this type of situation as things that you did that:
1. saved you company money
2. saved your company process
3.saved your company time
Time, process and money are the same thing in a working environment. Now if you can describe, on your resume, the things that you have done to help your employer save time, process and or money, you will stand out head and shoulders against your competition.
Hope this helps!?

Construction is starting to pick up here in the Puget Sound area. The medical field is always looking around here too.

What about an entry level position in the nursing industry? You could get your NAC in no time and be on your way to a lucrative career in the medical field. People get sick and die every day no matter how broke they are, and it can't be outsourced.

Join the club...

Its bad down here in AZ too...I was laid (layed) off last November. My resume is fine, I've been to every job fair, applied to jobs online, networked, been out on foot and nothing, nada, goose egg.

To keep busy...I have my GF, the band, the gym, and full-time student status at University of Phoenix. I hate not working and being unproductive.

Welcome to America...we're screwed.

How far are you from Chandler? I recently got offered an IT job for Inter-Tel. I didn't want to move down there, so I declined it.

+1

I expect to see hiring freezes in a lot of industries for a while just because businesses want to see where the market goes.

In the past 10-12 months, I've either applied to or sent resumes out for close to 1,000 positions. That is no exaggeration. From all of that, I've had 6 or 7 interviews and one job offer, which I accepted. Then, 3 days before I was to start, they said they've decided to hold off on filling the position until market conditions improve.

I was a land development/acquisition executive and have been applying for things outside of my industry as well with no luck. I'm either over-qualified or made too much $ previously or whatever.

It's bad, REAL BAD, out there now and will be for the foreseeable future.

I do have an interview next Tuesday, so please throw some positive mojo my way!

Dang....what are you guys doing wrong? My last job was offered to me before I could even apply.

Actually....I think I know. Someone else mentioned it in this thread already...networking. I knew the place I work at was hiring, so I put my feelers out to the GM. He called me and did an impromptu interview on the phone. He told me to come in and drop of my resume and an app. Before I could do that, he called back a few days later and offered me the job.

I'm the same way, except I've got an additional handicap: I've been a pro musician for the last several years. Before that, I had a very strong resumé, so now I'm both overqualified and underqualified! Gah!
