Jobhunting rant

Hey you ****

You just called me to say that your shop wants to thank me for my application & for coming over for an interview yesterday.

However, after some deliberation with other staff members, you've decided that you want someone with some experience in selling stuff to people.

You've assured me to keep my number in your cell and you'll contact me if something else comes up.

I have no doubt you will do this, seeing you've been so correct & professional with me over the last 3 weeks.

I handed you my curriculum in personal. I didn't hear from you for a week. I called you again. You told me you lost my curriculum. I emailed you my curriculum again. I didn't hear from you again for a week. I visited your shop again, asking you if you recieved my email. You said you did but that you hadn't had the time yet to look at it. I called you again on wednesday. You finally invited me for an interview on thursday.

In this interview I pointed out why I think I'm qualified enough to work in your store. For one, I probably have more experience in hiking & camping than the rest of your staff combined. I agree, I haven't worked in a store before, but I'm flexible, I could start today, I'm willing to work saturdays, sundays, holidays, I don't give a flying **** about the minimum wage you're offering, I just want to do work in something that interests me. I told you it's hard finding a job nowadays, especially if you have a degree in something nobody cares about, like me. Funny thing is, you have a degree in history, which is something even less people care about. So I thought you could relate. Towards the end of the interview things even got, oh my, friendly. I left your store feeling really good, feeling as if I finally landed a job, after months & months & months of being bounced off, with the ever re-occurring theme 'I'm sorry, but you don't have any experience'.

Let me ask you something, did you get a degree in selling hiking shoes? Did you went to the institute of backpackselling? I think not. Why not? Because SOMEONE GAVE YOU A ***DAMN CHANCE. When they hired you they weren't sure if you were up to it, but they probably decided that they'd evaluate you after a couple of weeks. And look at that, you made it store manager. Who would have thought that, you do have the capabilities to sell shoes & rucksacks to people, despite the fact that you studied history.

Imagine having to learn me how the shop works. This would take you a week, maybe even less. I'm not stupid. You would have to invest time in me for a week, after that I'd become a happy salesperson, selling overpriced crap to whomever would walk through your door.

I wonder, is it really the lack of experience that did me in? Or are you scared you'd have someone in your store who is as smart as you? Who is capable of saying what is on his mind?

I don't really care anymore, you can kiss my hairy, not so slim *** & go **** yourself.

And I wonder why this job opening had been on your website for 5 months.

Things are tough out there. I have 21 years' experience and I can't get a job. I keep getting passed over for kids right out of college who have a degree (which I don't have).

48 applications, zero interviews.

I assume your arrogance revealed itself sometime during the interview, which is maybe why the company went in another direction.

Hey, at least they called you to say "No Thanks". Many places won't even do that.

There's also the possibility that they are hesitant to hire you because you have a degree (hence, overqualified) and they think you will move on as soon as something more lucrative comes your way.

Maybe they think your over-qualified for the job, that you may become dissatisfied quickly? They want someone whom is easy to manage and go's with the flow.

I have been told in the past that due to a qualification in music, I was overqualified to work for a hi-fi distributor in the warehouse department, and that this was very hard work. I told them that's O.K. I don't mind the exercise....they weren't messing around about the 'hard' bit though, I lost 25 lbs in weight in 2 months ; )

Keep plugging away man, try not to let it get to you, the interview and selection process is very depersonalised and a lot of the time insensitive and rude.

Dude I'm so sorry to hear that because I seriously can relate. It f'ing sucks so much, especially when you put fourth the effort and they basically laugh in your face.

I was laid off last year and was on unemployment for about 8 months, and I was job searching everyday 8 hours a day checking every lead I could. I was fortunate enough to get an old job part time back and work freelance on the side to help me survive. But during that time I went on so many interviews and got turned down so much it was sickening.

My highlight of this time was this interview I went in for. This guy called and left a message. I returned his call and left a message and this went on for 2 days until I got the interview.

Well, day comes up and I'm in my nicest suit, portfolio in hand and I walk in. I end up waiting 45 min for this guy. He eventually gets to me and apologizes for running behind. We meet and he's playing on his computer the whole friggin time. I stand up mid sentence and call him out on it. "You make me wait 45 minutes past our scheduled time to see you and all you can do is play on your computer while I'm answering your questions, and you haven't made eye contact? I'm sorry but you can stop wasting my time. Good day." And I walked out.

I'm glad I did it, honestly I've never been so insulted. May not of been the smartest thing, but after you've been rejected so much you stop caring. I eventually landed a good job through a temp agency and I just accepted another job offer for a huge medical research company. And I have another interview next week! You just have to be persistent and learn to laugh at some of these assholes.

Thanks for all the replies.

I know I maybe come across as arrogant in my first post, but I'd rather be pissed off than crawl up in a hole and think of myself as not good enough for this kind of job.

You're better than that job, and it'll be recognized and snatched up. It sounds like your passion is actually the wilderness anyways, not selling wilderness gear.

Of course you gotta start somewhere, but there'll be somewhere better.

P.S. If anyone needs resume help, I'd be happy to consult.

Sounds like you applied for a job at REI. Not surprised this happened if that's the case, since they pulled the same stunt with me when I applied (with 2 current employee references, mind you).

I went past this store today, to see if they had hired someone else (as they told me they'd do).

Guess what, no new guy/girl, and the woman that interviewed me didn't dare to look me in the eye. Kinda sad haha

I'd call it frustration rather than arrogance, Mike. I know Bruno and he's a really good guy. Please don't form negative impressions of him based on one post made at a time when he's disappointed.

Bruno, sorry to hear this is still getting you down. It WILL get better, just be patient. You're going to have to be, anyway.

Having been promoted my company left me to interview people to fill my previous position. We had a girl come in who seemed capable of doing the job. She was supposed to start yesterday but she decided not to take the job, my guess, because she was over qualified for the position. So, I interviewed another person yesterday and gave him the job. He starts monday. Perhaps the new hire for the position you applied for starts nnext week?

Because retail is such a satisfying and rewarding career choice (says the guy that worked in retail for the first part of his adult life).
