A spokeswoman for John Hughes says the director of 1980s coming-of-age films like "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" has died in Manhattan.
Michelle Bega says the 59-year-old Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk. He was in Manhattan to visit family.
He made a teen star of Molly Ringwald with 1984's "Sixteen Candles" about a girl's nightmarish birthday on the eve of her sister's wedding.
Ringwald also starred in "The Breakfast Club," about a group of high school misfits during Saturday detention, and "Pretty in Pink."
Hughes also directed "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and wrote "Home Alone." He lived in Illinois and set many of his films in the Chicago area.

Well, color me bummed out. I was born in '87, but Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Breakfast Club and even Sixteen Candles still resonate/d with me. Rest in peace.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is my favorite movie. John Hughes made so many good films. Sad to see him go.

I just saw this on NPR. Sad. John Hughes made some classics and was influential on one of my favorite directors,...Kevin Smith.

As humorous as Landis but with greater feel for human emotions. I was just thinking about his latest disasters including DrillBit Taylor. Like many artists he did his best work when he was young....RIP

I had no idea until now that, in addition to everything else he did, he wrote all the Vacation movies. Man, what a run he had. RIP, Mr. Hughes.

Pitchfork put together a nice musical tribute.

Even though he has not done anything I've liked since '91 I will forever bow down to him for the excellent films that have made such a huge impact on my adolescence. RIP sir!

He wrote "Some Kind Of Wonderful", one of my favorite teen movies ever.

RIP John
