John Lennon in car commercial??

Sign in to disble this ad
Apparently this was allowed by Yoko, her rationale was to "keep John's image and message out there for people to see". Personally, as much as I try to rationalize what she's saying, I can't. I find it pretty disturbing actually to use John's image to sell anything. Just 'aint right.
Pretty ironic though to use old video clips to sell something new, when you hear what John's saying in the clip..

While John Lennon was a very iconic and important figure in a lot of ways, he too benefited from - hell, owes his ability to achieve what he did to commercialism. If not for commercialism, "Give peace a chance" wouldn't have had a chance and "Instant Karma" would probably be mistaken for the latest powdered spiritual supplement from GNC.

To "sell" his ideals, yeah I kind of agree with that, but to use his image sell cars....? The sole intention is profit, not world peace or any other sort of idealism.

I dunno, here's another one and it looks like maybe the audio was dubbed

Maybe they're just using the images and inserting their own audio. Either way it's too bad to see John used like this.

Freedom to sell. Freedom to ignore salesmen. Peace and love... These are some of John Lennon's ideals.

If anything, John Lennon fully understood both the necessity and the down side of commercialism - but he'd be the ultimate hypocrite to say his music should be exempt from it's clutches.

While the subject matter of John's songs covered the gambit from love and relationships to world peace, he also was very snide and cynical about 'stupid people' and made no bones about singing about them in snarky, condescending terms - and those very people he sang about were the ones relentlessly buying up what he was selling.

Whether they got it or not - not his problem. Caveat Emptor, baby. If people who love Lennon are fooled into buying these cars because they think John wants them too, that's just the way it goes and John would have probably written a song about it.

Man, I'm glad she did that. I was about to forget who John Lennon was.

interesting... this is like the opposite of how ford used the late (and great) steve mcqueen in those commercials for the retro redesigned mustang a few years ago. harkening back to a day when cars looked like machines instead of UFOs.

Doesn't seem any different than how she controlled him in life. Still a shame, though.

I actually don't have anything against Yoko. I may not necessarily like her, but In a way I admire her. She's a strong and obviously intelligent woman. And that's precisely why this thing bugs me so much. It's like a conundrum - I don't believe that she's naive enough to think that a Citroen car commercial is going to perpetuate John's "message" in any way shape or form.
So that leaves the potential that she did this for profit. However knowing that she's pretty strong in her beliefs, it would seem odd that she would betray her beliefs like that for what amounts to pocket change. So this one leaves me with a big w-t-fudge..?
