just got into this argument with my guitarist..

Sign in to disble this ad
so i'm at work muckin around with my guitarist buddy (we're starting up a band here, he's been playin for 20 years) ..

he's arguing how a 24 fret bass is not needed, ya don't need to play above the 12th fret, etc..

i bring up the argument that 24 fret 35" scale 5 string bass has better tension than a 20 fret 34" scale 5 string ..

so he says "get heavier strings" ..

i say .. "sometimes ya can't, the groove that the string sits in on the saddle on the bridge sometimes can't accept heavier - look at my shecter, if the groove isn't big enough, the action of that b string will be higher than the rest" ..

he says he's never heard that before and worked in shops and played for 20 years ..

lol.

I don't know the answer. I just know that if my bass had no frets above the 12th, I'd never ever miss them. At all.

Scale makes a difference in string tension, number of frets doesn't. I play high up the neck, but never felt the need for 24 frets over 21. Besides if your really want those extra notes get a six string and totally blow your guitards mind

Scale and heavier strings both have to do with tension.

Who cares? It's your bass, play what you want.

Personally, if I had only seven frets and two strings you wouldn't know the difference from listening to me play.

Fine, stay below the 12th fret. But get a 6 or 7 string bass

Another ignorant comment from a guitarist. I can't say I'm surprised. Why exactly is it that guitarists always think they know what's best when it comes to bass?

This is like telling a guitarist that the only effects he needs are distortion and reverb, and everything else is useless and only guitar wankers use more than that. Tell that to all the guitarists you see with a pedal board full of stuff that is worth more collectively than their guitar and amp put together.

Tell your coworker, "That's why you're a GUITARIST, working in a GUITAR shop, not a BASS shop."

Then tell him to play three-note gallops as fast as you. Heh heh. I love that. "Wow, I can play sooo fast, listen to me shred!" Oh yeah? Play some Iron Maiden/Iced Earth gallops as fast as THIS with your fancy-pantz pick! What's that? Forearm burns from all the down strokes? Awww... too bad you have one pick, and I have three fingers...

Cuz I have no pinky fingers.

funny thing is ...

he played bass for 5 years in a rock band that made it all the way to opening for a band at Pine Knob ..

his bass was a musicman 5 string .. used a pick and plugged directly into the PA.

sends all of his stuff to pros to fix, even strings .. won't touch the stuff himself.

lol

Actually, the number of frets has NOTHING to do with the scale length, so neither of you were right. You can have a 38-fret 30" scale bass, or you can have a 21-fret 35" scale bass. The scale length is the measure from the nut to the bridge saddle, not the nut to the last fret. The number of frets that are crammed between the nut and the bridge is up the the maker.

If it's alright for New Order and Ned's Atomic Dustbin then it's alright by me. FTR my bass has 26 frets but I haven't found all use for all of them yet.

I would have just said "I have 24 frets so I can jam this bass further up your *&#. Now shut the #@$% up and play your damn guitar."

Yeah. That's what I would have said.

I'm in awe of what some guitar players say or think they know about bass gear. It's fascinating... in a sick and aggravating kind of way.
