I'm a live sound engineer in Philadelphia. I work at a club about 20 blocks from my house several nights a week. I have a car but I almost always ride my bike. Tonight on my way to work I rode my bike past my own parked car and noticed something on the hood. I stopped to take a look. IT WAS MY F%#$ING SIDE VIEW MIRROR! We're talking about the mirror on the passenger side, the side along the side-walk. It's not like a car accidentally swiped it off. Someone on the side walk stopped and ripped my mirror off for no reason. As I said I'm a live sound engineer and a musician. I don't have a "day job." The point is, I don't make squat. I can barely buy food. I ride my bike everywhere I can because I can't afford gas. I simply won't be able to have to this fixed. Maybe in a couple months but not any time soon. This is going to interfere with me doing gigs because my rear view mirror is often obscured my equipment forcing me to rely on my side view mirrors. Not any more. I just don't know what else to say. I would love to forgive and forget but I'm going to be reminded of this every time I drive for a long while.

Do you have insurance? That's what it's for. Put in a claim, and get it fixed, unless the deductible is too high. If that's the case, then..............................

I wish but they smashed the mirror out while they were ripping it off my car. It wasn't a clean snap off the mirror, the bracket on my car where it was attached is mangled as well. I wouldn't be so pissed if I had done this myself backing into a tight spot or something. Even if it had been the other side mirror I could at least figure that someone knocked it off with their car by accident. It's the fact that someone stopped and took the time to mess up my car for no reason that really bothers me.

I've lived on the east coast my whole life. At one time I would probably take offense to that comment but more and more I see that people really are different here. This isn't the first time something like this has happened to me either. About a year ago someone ripped my bike apart while it was locked outside. I filed a police report that time because it was right by my apartment building. The cops told me they had just a had a similar situation where they actually caught the guys because this girl had locked her bike in view of an ATM camera. Can you guess what the vandals looked like? Four grown men in suits.

right side mirror is not needed by law... You won't get ticketed. At least in Cal.

Yup, I just moved from Michigan to Maryland, and you can tell that people are meaner, less courteous, and just have less common decency. I've been visiting Baltimore for about 3 years now, and living here for 5 months, it's crystal clear that people on the east coast ARE different. I'm not trying to bash any east coasters here (considering im now one), but it's just a simple fact of life. One of the biggest things is the driving, specifically merging.

I'm still trying to figure out why it's like this, since the east coast is so pretty, which the ocean and all. Not only that, the air smells nice, good food, etc. etc.

I live about an hour away from DC and I agree. People don't say "Thank you, Excuse me, Sorry, oops, I didn't know" they also "drive like maniacs, never use a turn signal, will not recognize personal space" etc.

Don't even try and drive the speed limit, god forbid, you will get run over or honked at.

While it's great all of these cultures are melting together in our area, it's creating a modern day Tower of Babel where people can't communicate on a civil level anymore. Common courtesy isn't optional in my opinion. Arrogance is the norm around here. So people just don't even try to be nice anymore. I still say please and thank you, excuse me etc. and get blank stares.

The wife and I agree we want to move once her folks retire (she works for them).

That stinks. You should look into a different line of work though if it ain't paying off. Doesn't sound like a good financial situation to be in if you can barely afford food.
