Just moved to Duluth...suggestions for recreation? Eh?

Good live music? Micro breweries?

I've never been too intersted in hunting or fishing so there goes about 85% of what people seem to do here for recreation. I know there is plenty to do in the Canal Park area but watching ships come in is only cool in the summer! Suggestions other than move south?

I'd investigate hunting and fishing options if I were you. You might just find out you like it. People head up that way for the purpose of fishing and or hunting..... I'm not much into climbing volcanoes, but if I moved to Iceland, I'd probably give it a shot. Just sayin...

I have a few friends that live in the Cities, and their opinion of Duluth seems to be that it's boring.

Got a motorcycle, or a snow mobile? I think that area is good for those activities too.

Maybe I'll just work out a lot and concentrate fitne...sorry I couldn't even finish writing that one. The thought was making me dizzy and I almost fell out of my chair. I'd say a snowmobile is in my future.

Lake Superior is COLD!! Even in August, it's pretty damn cold!

I imagine with the right equipment to prevent you from dying of hypothermia, it could be an awesome place for diving though.

Yeah average temp even in the summer is only like 40 something degrees (the lake I mean). I was up here last summer and we walked over to the beach and waded in...yikes! Beautiful place in the summer though.

I used to know a guy that dove Superior in a dry suit, pulling up all kinds of fishing tackle and assorted anchors, etc from the rocky bottom.

Other things to do - Fitsgers? There are a few other small breweries there as well. There is a nice little violin shop out in canal park that had a few nice basses - upright basses - last time I visited. They will be able to tell you more about the music scene.

Good luck,

- Paul

I actually happened upon a Jug Band out in Canal Park last summer. I think they've got a blues and reggae fest down there sometime in the summer as well. Really a cool place in the summer from what I've seen in my visits. Too bad winter lasts like 6+ months!

The key to getting through winter is having activities - indoor and outdoor - to help pass the time. It isn't always bitter cold and snowing.

Do you like hockey? I think they just built a new place for hockey. The Bulldogs are pretty good - not as good as the Sioux from UND, but that can be fun to watch for a weekend here and there.

This might be a controversial suggestion in TBOT, but have you thought about taking this opportunity to spend more time on your bass playing? Maybe sorting out a few local gigs? What's the scene like there?

welcome to minnesota!!! have lived here since 1977 and have been to Duluth 3 times once to go sight seeing once to go skiing at spirit mountain and once just for a nice drive...I live in Forest Lake around 120 some odd miles south of Duluth. Yep, 3 times just not that much to do there I guess.

I lived in Duluth for a summer. I imagine winter is probably pretty bad except walking in the mall or something. Skyline Drive is nice. Yea, stuff to do out on the point. The maritime museum is cool. Grandmas's and all that. There is a good music store, Great Northern. Friend of mine used to work there. We played in a group together as the house band downtown on Superior Street. He's Ron K. I'm Bob.

Not too far north is a neat drive. Decent aquarium in town. Of course there's Spirit mountain if you ski. Into and past Superior, WI on the other side of the bridge, it's not too far to a couple neat state parks and Brule recreation area for canoeing, camping, etc.

I used to live there for 5 years. I really like Vintage Italian Pizza for pizza around there.

I also lived in Superior for a while too, they have a lot of bars, and a lot of places to play. If you go to Norm's Beer and Brats on tuesdays, they have 25 cent tacos and 5 dollar pitchers, and the Anchor Bar is a good place to go for a rich and greasy burger.

Canal park is cool but only if you love tourists. Eastend is cool, there is Glensheen you can check out, and Lester Park is cool to hang out in the fall, there is a lot of good color over there.

The theater scene is actually pretty cool, I helped out in a few pit bands up there, and all the theater people are super friendly, if you are looking to get involved over there.

The Mall sucks.

Sir Benidict's on the lake is a cool hangout--the owner is a super cool guy from Italy...very friendly. Also Carmody's is fun too--my favorite tap in all the city.

If you get a band together, get into homegrown--it's a twin ports-wide fest that all local bands play in--its a cool thing.

Duluth is a cool city!

It's a made up quote that Mark Twain didn't actually say, but "The coldest winter I've ever lived through was that summer in duluth" and it's not completely untrue--Duluth is typically pretty cool in the summer, which is really nice on the good days

come to think of it, i'd really like to move back lol but most of my college friends moved away so it probably wouldn't be the same.

Welcome to Duluth!!
Have you found your niché here yet?
There's usually plenty to do, you just have to find it!
What are your hobbies? Maybe I could point you in the right direction!

.. interestingly, it is amazing how many people you run into that are FROM Duluth ... past tense ... I lived probably 45+ years of my 57 in Duluth, and there is actually quite a bit to do, you just need to find it, as there are many little 'nitches' kind of hidin ...

I second the theater scene there that SuperB mentioned ... I was very involved for the last several years I was there, great bunch of folk and all kinds of opportunities ...

... lots of churchs, many that play contemporary Christian music that is really pretty good too ... also, dont overlook the scenery and its heritage, its easy to do for folk that live there and take it for granted ... its like anything, you can either complain about nothing to do, or get out and get involved in the community ... LOTS of volunteer opportunities around there, from working with animals to artsy type stuff ... nice town, they drove me out with their school levy's and property taxes ... not the town to own rental properties these days ... I am about an hour and half south right now ... I know a ton of folk in Duluth, holler if you need names to hook you up a bit in whatever you find of interest ... I might be able to steer you a bit ... enjoy!!
