I'm a long time Sprint customer, and since I was due for an upgrade, pulled the trigger on the BlackBerry Curve 8330. This phone is SICK! My friend has the AT&T version of the same phone. It's amazing. http://www.blackberrycurve.com/
Anyone else have the Curve?

How are the plans? | I think you might want to wait until you get to Japan. I have the iPhone and I found that it was pretty damn convenient. Especially in Tokyo where there are so many wifi spots. I suggest waiting because they have some AMAZING phones over there. I would love the opportunity to have one of those phones if I lived there. One of my brother in laws has a Sharp Aqueos phone. It's like a tiny plasma tv. It shoots video in HD, and works something like a satellite TV, so you can watch things in HD. The screen flips around so you can watch it letter box style. I've also seen a phone that has a camera portion that detaches from the phone portion for filming. It must communicate with the other piece via blue tooth.
I actually wanted to get the Blackberry Curve when I thought that I could get a reduced price on it. Then I found out that I couldn't and I discovered the prices was (at the time) the same as the iPhone. So I jumped on the iPhone. It's a killer phone no doubt. |

Voice and data plans are really cheap here, how do Japanese plans compare?

Expecting a review from you asap!

Once I figure out how to use all the specifics and get some time in on it, I'll give a full review.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: Fort Collins, Colorado | | | I have the 8330 - just changed over from a Treo 755p (Palm system, not Windows).
It's a good unit, and it's lighter and slightly more convenient than the Treo. it also responds to commands more quickly.
However, I wouldn't have changed if my Treo hadn't suddenly refused to sync with my desktop, and a month of fighting it along with my IT Administrator couldn't fix it. I think the BB is a very nice unit, but it's not the second coming. BB fanatics seem to think the sun rises and sets on it...but it's just a PDA phone in a small, convenient package.
You will find that unlike the Treo, there's practically no free software for it. Also, if you have more than one email account, it dumps all your email into one inbox. Separating it into different inboxes requires a $20 aftermarket software package. Also, the current BB OS doesn't show HTML format emails correctly - it shows the code, which makes them darn near impossible to read. OS 4.5 is supposed to correct this, but it hasn't officially been released...although that should happen this fall. I just spent $30 for a software package to make my HTML emails readable - not very happy about it, either.
I think you'll like the BB a lot. It's not perfect, though. I suggest you join Crackberry.com and check the 83XX Forum often for news.

As I mentioned, I'm totally new to this. My last phone was a Katana II. lol.
Quick (and I'm sure dumb) question.. Where is the browser on this thing???

Mine is fond of telling me pages are too big and refusing to load them...just when I'm getting to the page I want. It also seems to hang and tell me the server is too busy, but when I choose the "Go To" a page option, that gets around the server problem.
Many people load Opera Mini as an alternative, although it also has pluses and minuses. I keep both browsers on mine.
I would characterize the existing browser options as adequate, and I'm hoping for better ones as time passes. It's also possible that successive BB OS versions will have improvements in this area.

How much is your plan setting you back? It's looking like another $40+ a month for a data plan on top of my voice plan on Verizon.

I don't "need" one, but they are very good phones, very reliable and I like to support local (RIM is a 30 minute drive from here). They are coming out with a flip phone (which I will be getting) and a touch screen one in the fall.

I was *supposed* to have two phone interviews this week (one yesterday, one today), but they both had to reschedule. So they will be later this week. I'm hoping at least one of those pans out. I WILL be out there... It's just a matter of landing a job. Quote:

I know everyone that has a Pearl loves it, I was just afraid I wouldn't be able to get used to it. The Curve really isn't that much bigger. At all!
Sprint just unleashed some "Simply Everything" plans, where you get either 450, 900, or unlimited voice minutes with unlimited data and text messaging for $69, $89, or $99 respectively. I chose the 900 minute plan. It has unlimited message and data, so I'm pretty sure I'm set. The plans cover all roaming and national long distance, so no worries!

We get screwed on cell phone plans. I have a plan for 250 daytime minutes/unlimited evenings and weekends, no long distance plan ( so $.10 a minute), unlimited texting and no data. My last bill was $59.
